Search For Atlantis Review

Of all the Atlantis documentaries out there, this is probably the best that I have seen. It gives a good overview of how the Atlantis story has changed throughout the ages and also a brief overview of all the latest theories (Atlantis in Antarctica, Atlantis & the Altiplano, good old Santorini, of course). Ted Danson, who's father was an archaeologist, does a great job hosting the material and you get the idea of the sincerity of his interest in the topic. The visual recreation of Atlantis and the music it's scored to are also mesmerizing. If you aren't interested in Atlantis at first, this documentary will get you interested in it. On second glance, it does have some problems, though. Too often does it veer off into distinct non-Atlantis territory - Columbus & the search for Antillia, the excavations of the Mayan pyramids and the Nazis. The time spent here could have been better spent on something else more clearly related to the topic, other evidence and theories. It dismisses Edgar Cayce a bit too easily, also relies too often on the opinions of Richard Ellis, who talks a good game, but who's credentials are dubious at best. A circular object that satellite photos have found beneath the ice of Antarctica (that may or not be the Citadel of Atlantis or some other equally intriguing obect) is barely touched upon and it could have very well been made the focus of the show (four years later, no one still knows what it is beneath the ice). The Azores, Canaries, Cuba and many other sites steeped in Atlantis lore aren't mentioned at all and the documentary's final conclusion, that Plato invented Atlantis because he was upset over his mentor Socrates' death, an event that happened many decades earlier, also doesn't hold water (pun intended). These are all points that a genuine researcher would quibble with, but don't interfere too much with the overall program. This documentary is a good place to start with if you're interested in Atlantis, just but not to end there. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you?
