Mia aioniotita kai mia mera Review

This film doesn't need me as an advocate. It won the 1998 Palme d'Or and deservedly so. It is a beautiful, meditative, thought-provoking film. Like the Amazon editorial indicated, it is akin to Bergman's "Wild Strawberries," and Kurosawa's "Ikiru." Like them, at its centre is an old man, at the end of his life, looking back, trying to find some meaning to it all. Here is a man, who for all his life has been absorbed by two things, himself and his work. He coasts through life not really relating to those nearest and dearest to him. Now at the end of his life, he opens a letter from his long-dead wife; a letter which speaks of her love for him and recounts what for her was a very special day, but which for him, was just another day which slipped away without much thought. As he reads the letter, he relives that "perfect" day; one that meant so much to his wife but to which he himself was an almost absent participant. He tries to make amends for his life-long distancing and aloofness by trying to help a little Albanian runaway. But in the end, it is too little too late.

In the word-game he plays with the Albanian child, the boy brings him three words which actually make up the central themes of the film. The first word, "Korfulamu," refers to the tender love between mother and child; the second, "Xenitis," refers to being in exile, being a stranger or an outsider; and the third word, "Argathini," means late in the night, or simply too late. He chants these words repeatedly at the end of the film. For these words encapsulate his life. And they encapsulate the themes of this haunting film. But Angelopulos makes clear it is not a pessimistic film. In the final scene before he enters the Hospital to die, he asks the memory of his wife, "How long does Tomorrow last?" and she replies, "An Eternity and a Day." In the end, you have the choice. However short your time, you can make even the slightest act, the most significant; even the briefest moment last forever.

Sadly this film will not appeal to most Americans. Like the previous reviewer has put it so succinctly, most will see it as "excruciatingly slow" and "boring". I also liked the way another reviewer described how its briefest shots are "longer than the longest shots in most Hollywood movies". It is languid. It is not meant to be hurried through. It is an "art-film" and if anything, it is visual poetry. It does require some maturity and will appeal to those who have reached a stage where they can look back and ponder. Give it the chance and you will be rewarded.

Alas, New Yorker Video continues its tradition of shoddy DVD transfers. The print is exceedingly dark. The picture is extremely soft, at points blurry. Nicks, scratches and dirt specks abound. The film is presented in its original 1.66:1 widescreen, letterboxed into a 4:3 frame. It has not been enhanced for widescreen TV. We are given the original Greek 2.0 Dolby Surround track. Sound is serviceable. Optional English subtitles are provided. The Extras are surprisingly very good. The highlight is a 22-minute introduction by Andrew Horton, Professor of Film Studies at the University of Oklahoma. He talks of the film in relation to Homer's Odyssey, Angelopulos' visual style, postmodernism and Angelopulos' standing in the history of Cinema. There is a 10-minute "Analysis of a shot," made for French TV, in which Angelopulos himself talks about his shooting style. This is in French with optional English subtitles. Finally there is a collection of Greek poetry from Solomos, Seferis and Cavafy, all in English translations. Solomos is the poet featured in the fantasy sequences and whose poem, the film's protagonist spent his whole life trying to complete. There is also an 8-page foldout featuring an informative interview with Angelopulos. However, the film itself deserves a much better transfer. Hopefully Criterion can release it someday, suitably restored, so it can stand alongside their lovely restorations of the Bergman and Kurosawa classics to which it has been compared.

Loft (2010) [ Blu-Ray, Reg.A/B/C Import - Netherlands ] Review

***NOTE: This movie is in European format and will not play on American machines UNLESS you unlock your existing player. This is very easily done and will then allow you to enjoy all region DVDs uninterrupted . Go online to various sites that offer this, look for your brand and model, write down the code and follow the simple instructions. (Or ask any passing ten year old to do it for you!)
NO one star "reviews" whining about "Won't play on my player"! Now read on.

Tired Of American movies with their obligatory car chases, explosions and helicopters?
Hanging out for some damn good writing and a plot that you don't guess the ending to about three minutes into the film?
Then "The Loft" is definitely one for you.

Yes, it's in Dutch, .....but don't let that put you off as it is subtitled very professionally and they are easy to read.

This is a well crafted thriller which will actually keep you guessing as its convolutions unfold.
The basics revolve around an architects new building in which he has constructed a private "loft" apartment, ...which he decides to maintain as a secret rendezvous where he can carry out his extra-marital sexual encounters.
He decides to let four of his close mates also use it as a convenient trysting place and gives them each a key, ...which he codes so as no more can be cut.
All of course are sworn to secrecy in order to enjoy this privilege without the knowledge of their respective wives.

Apparently all goes well until one morning one of the key-holders enters the loft to find a very serious crime has been committed, and one which not only threatens to involve the police, but expose their clandestine affairs and ruin their marriages, if not their whole lives.
What started as a "harmless" bit-on-the-side, ...has now become a full-on major problem.

The five men are quite differing characters. There's the drunken sleazy bore, the drug-fuelled psychopath, the analytical psychologist, the quiet introvert and of course the architect himself who is something of a manipulator.
Their previous closeness immediately begins to break down with accusations and counter inferences flying wildly.
Who is responsible, ...and how can they all make this just go away so no one has to pay the penalty of being found out?

The action is largely (but not exclusively) based within the apartment itself, ...and the director makes the building something of a character in the narrative. It features this very sharp looming edge, ....and it becomes almost like a Titanic bow, plowing its way to it's date with tragedy.

All the performances are excellent, ...truly believable, with no one chewing the scenery.
The cast are "unknowns" to most of us non-Europeans, but all the better for that.
I do find familiar faces distracting from the character being played, ..plus the fact when is Tom Cruise ever anything else but Tom Cruise?

If like me, you're intrigued by mysteries, then you will be forever coming up with your own theories as to what's REALLY going on here. These will constantly change as we are shown more and more aspects of just what has preceded in the men's lives who are facing this situation.
Without giving anything away, there are more than just the one "solution" I warn you, ....and just when you think you've pinned it down and the movie is about to end, ...it most certainly isn't!!!
This makes The Loft a hugely engaging movie to watch, and one which will ultimately mystify, fascinate and amaze with its cleverly constructed plot.
It's an acute observation of the duplicity of men, mate-ship and its ties, and just what we owe to friends and where the boundaries might lie.

The writing itself is so often the last thing to be considered with so much current American cinema. As long as they've signed a "big name", got a budget for CGI, hired a helicopter and got at least twenty cars to smash up, they just start shooting. Any plot can be construed between takes it seems.
"The Loft" is a most welcome antithesis of this idea.
A movie where you do not have to park your brain in neutral before watching! In fact, you can actually use it to engage with the story!
Amazing!
Five stars all the way.

Study Secrets of Successful Students DVD Review

I was fully not happy with the material because it was very short, very expensive and did not provide too much real substance. I did not use it at all after I saw the video in its entirety.

I can easily recommend this movie to anyone (well that speaks Spanish, of course). It is a movie that is fit for just about every type of family. It is sweet, but not cheesy and it is inspirational above all. The actors are fantastic.

The seller was great. I ordered this product with standard shipping yet it arrived a lot earlier than I expected, yay! And the products were in great condition.

Metropia [Region B] Review

A gray and dystopic future, evil megacorp taking over the world and the people in it - OK, that part's been done. 'Metropia' stands out for doing it brilliantly. It's a lot more than that, though.

Animation has explored the super-realistic, with just enough success that the discrepancies become especially jarring. This goes farther, well into the surreal. That allows for exaggerations of faces and figures, wide-eyed blankness and evil scowls that wouldn't be phyiscally possible for human actors. And, despite great advances in computer-aided post-production, animators can build their worlds from the ground up in the image they want, with no need to retrofit them into scraps of reality. This movie really does use animation in a novel and very distinctive way.

Very enjoyable in many ways. Certainly not one for the kiddies, it scarcely qualifies as as "adult" movie - but body-shy viewers might have trouble with brief- and semi-nudity.
