Product Description

Lulu Belle (Dorothy Lamour) is singing in a cheap dive in Natchez, Mississippi in the early 1900's when she meets rising young attorney George Davis (George Montgomery). He gives up his fiancee and career to marry Lulu Bell. When his money runs out, Lulu Belle goes to work in a New Orleans club run by tough gambler Mark Brady (Albert Dekker). She tries to send George back to Natchez by pretending that she has fallen for prize-fighter Butch Cooper (Greg McClure) but George, in a fit of jealousy, drives a handful of forks into Butch's face. He is sent to prison and Lulu goes to New York with millionaire Harry Randolph (Otto Kruger), who makes her the singing sensation of Broadway and asks her to marry him. She refuses when she learns that George has been released from prison, realizing that he is the only man she ever truly loved.

Lulu Belle Review

If you know Dorothy Lamour only as the incredibly beautiful but sweet and innocent island girl from a dozen "sarong" adventures or the ROAD movie comedies, well here is a suprise for you, Dorothy Lamour as an incredibly beautiful but predatory and amoral turn of the century chanteuse in LULU BELLE, one of the star's least typical films. Released in 1948 by Columbia, this movie was clearly inspired by Rita Hayworth's legendary GILDA which loaded up the studio's coffers in 1946 for Lamour's role is very similar to Hayworth's in that classic. LULU BELLE was actually a two-decade old Broadway play that was one of the 1920's biggest stage successes and the triumph of Lenore Ulrich's career when the story finally got around to being filmed, it's racy storyline the main reason for the long delay. The resulting film is rather water-downed on from the original but who can really complain with Dorothy Lamour looking her best in elegant Jean-Louis gowns and singing some wonderful songs in lush tones. "There was something about the way she looked at a man that made bells ring" was the famous ad copy for this movie which admittedly was not one of Lamour's bigger hits but it is well loved by Dorothy's fans who really enjoy the change of pace for the star.
