Product Description

I think it's probably impossible not to be charmed out of your socks by Junior High School" said film critic Roger Ebert. And I must admit I totally agree with him, which is not something I commonly do; simply put, you'd have to be a real scrooge not to find some sort of pleasure in this one. The plot is rather simply, has a boy (David Stewart) of about fourteen trying to summon up the courage to ask the school's prettiest girl (Karen Capelle) to attend a party with him. As his best friend (Kirk Burnett) gives him all sorts of advice on how to accomplish this, teachers, bullies and the class nerd (Mikal Robert Taylor) do much to get in the way. Somewhat oddly, this is a musical as well as a comedy/drama; it all works quite well, though, is really a lot of fun. The kids were all non-professional actors/actresses who attended Van Nuys Junior High in California. One of them happens to be the now famous pop singer Paula Abdul.

Junior High School Review

I first saw this either on pre-cable poor quality "ON TV" or early HBO, late 70's or very early 80's and taped it. As I have a musical background and have worked with kids for a
living, I found this 38 minute short very entertaining, if amateurish to the extreme. Of course, if one takes the time to learn about this short, they
will realize it had almost no actors with previous experience. However, the songs and the choreography are rather complex and clever, and the story of
a boy in the 8th or 9th grade having a crush on a girl who is interested in older guys is timeless, and the songs and styles portrayed are representative
of Junior High (today called middle school) in the 50's through much of the 70's. There is the obnoxious nerd with the briefcase, the advisor friend who
is too shy himself, the jealous girl who plots to trap our hero "Jerry" into taking her to the party that Sherrie (Paula Abdul) is planning. And Jerry of
course wants to bring his crush Lori, but can't seem to get an opportunity to ask her. The songs deal with shop classes, gym class, girls with small busts,
(The famous "Itty Bitty Titty Committee"), The Party, Advice, Their Feelings, and the Finale, "Junior High School". Many songs have 2 or 3 parts that in
the final verse are overlaid and sound great. The real pleasure for me was learning the songs through repeated viewings, since the acting is not the films
forte, and the story, while fun and satisfying is not full of surprises. Some undoubtedly will watch this once and be done with it, or even stop it in
the middle because it looks so cheesy. But Roger Ebert gave this a fine review, and if you can only enjoy highly sophisticated fare or action films, then
look elsewhere. I just paid $65 for a commercial VHS, as my old copy was very poor, and the short has never been put on DVD. I have probably watched it
2 or 3 dozen times, and still like to show it to others or occasionally just watch it to hear the songs.
