The Icelandic Sheepdog is Iceland's only native dog. It came to Iceland with the original Viking settlers between 874 and 930 AD. The Icelandic sheepdog and its method of working adapted to the local terrain, farming methods and struggle for survival of the Icelandic people.

The Icelandic Kennel Club, Hundaraektarfelag Islands, was founded on September 4th 1969 by a group of people concerned with the preservation of the Icelandic Sheepdog, saving it from extinction and keeping the breed pure. In 1979, the Icelandic sheepdog breed club, Deild Islenska Fjarhundsins, was founded within the Icelandic Kennel Club and from that time has been responsible for the development and safeguarding of the breed.
