Homage to Verdi [VHS] Review

One of the foremost operatic baritones of the twentieth century, Sherrill Milnes pays homage in this 1975 documentary to the composer most central to his career and dearest to his heart, Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901). Milnes takes us to northern Italy and shows us Verdi's boyhood and adulthood homes - the latter preserved just as it was when Verdi lived there - while telling of his favorite composer's life in a clear, dignified, and reverent manner. Interspersed with the narration (some of which is accompanied by the moving overture to LA TRAVIATA) are Milnes' renditions (lip-synched to pre-recorded tracks) of arias from Verdi operas like LA TRAVIATA, LA FORZA DEL DESTINO, I VESPRI SICILIANI, and ATTILA. Additionally, Milnes sings short excerpts of arias from RIGOLETTO and MACBETH; and it is in these, sung without any accompaniment at all, that his plummy voice is most beautifully displayed. A special highlight of HOMAGE TO VERDI is the last part, which finds Milnes in his dressing room making up for the role of Rigoletto while shedding light on the complex character of the deformed court jester. This is followed by some onstage footage of a RIGOLETTO performance. Though the sound is constricted here, Milnes' version of Rigoletto's Act II aria, "Cortigiani, vil razza dannata," is a gem. HOMAGE TO VERDI is a wonderful program for music students, opera and Verdi enthusiasts, and Milnes fans.
