Also released in the UK as "The Flesh And The Fiends". The Alpha version is the pan and scan US cut of the film that is missing about six minutes. But what more than makes up for it are the amazing performances of Peter Cushing, George Rose and Donald Pleasance in this historical drama based on the infamous Burke and Hare body snatching scandal. I think this may be Cushing's greatest role. He gives a masterclass in film acting as Knox that you will never forget. The film does have melodramatic moments and a love interest, but it is very unconventional. Though this was not a Hammer film it has the feel of one. This is also a great film to put on a double bill with Boris Karloff's "The Body Snatcher" because "Mania" gives you all the background that people keep hinting at in THAT film about Knox, Burke and Hare. If you must have the original screen ratio and a complete cut, this movie is available under its' British title from Image as a DVD.
