IQ: Live From London Review

If you're an IQ fan, you'll like this DVD. I haven't checked the song list, but I believe most of the songs are from the album Wake.

The sound on this DVD is pretty good, but not great. There seems to be a mis-match in the sound of the vocals compared to the rest of the band - meaning that everything sounded pretty clear except for the vocals. I wound up adding an EQ boost in the upper midrange (I think it was ~3.5KHz), and things sounded much better.

I was impressed by the video quality, considering the time frame of the actual performance. As far as camera angles, I would have liked to have seen more shots of the drummer and bassist, though I loved seeing lots of closeups of the keyboardist, which many other concert DVDs seem to omit. If you're a synthesizer fanatic, Martin Orford (sp?) uses an ARP Odyssey, Mellotron, Yamaha CS80 (I think), SLM Concert Spectrum (I think), and more.

All in all, the performance is great and true to the studio recordings. The singer (sorry, I'm bad with names) doesn't really sing with a stable pitch (this is evident on the studio recordings), and in this live performance his pitch wanders even more. It doesn't bother me that much, but it probably would bother others. Oh, and one funny moment was when the singer was trying to put the mic on the mic stand - it popped out of the holder and fell to the ground. heheh...

Anyway, it was great to see this concert. If you're a fan of the band, don't hesitate to pick up this DVD.
