Inland Sea [VHS] Review

This is what it is like to live in Japan. I was amazed to see it captured so perfectly on film. The scenery, the pace of life, the day-to-day people and things, everything is at once completely real and yet tinged with nostalgia. Overlaying this vision is the inner musings of Donald Richie, a man with profound insight on the island nation of Japan, and what it is like to live there as a foreigner. Almost every time, his thoughts were familiar ones, reflections that I myself have had on the sights and people I have seen.

"The Inland Sea" is a leisurely tour across the Seto Inland Sea, the body of water that separates the island of Shikoku from the main island of Honshu. Donald Richie reads passages from his acclaimed travel-diary of the same name, published some 30 years earlier. Retaking this trip as an older man, Richie is nostalgic but still reverent of the lifestyle along this stretch of water. The images drift across small, perfect islands that look like something from a painting, to elegant coffee shops and covered shopping arcades, to an gorgeous, isolated island where lepers live, playing gateball and waiting to die peacefully. Everything is authentic.

Richie is also honest with himself in his dialog, sometimes uncomfortably so. He acknowledges things about being a traveler, such as the sexual freedom that people can find in Japan, without coming off as salacious or exploitative. It is something that simply is a part of the journey, as much as the occasional loneliness and the awe.

Unlike so many travel guides of Japan, "The Inland Sea" does not attempt to highlight the strangeness of Japan, the unfamiliar food and customs. It does not put forth a "Japan! Wow!" tour of the exciting sites and great majesties you can find there. People looking for that sort of thing will find themselves disappointed by it. Rather, like a boat gently drifting down a slow river, it shows real people living their real lives, and it does so beautifully.

Boston Legal S5 [Import anglais] Review

The genius that is David E Kelly and Boston Legal. There have been a handful of shows that I consider to be the very best of what television has to offer and Boston Legal is at the very top of the list.

At the centre of the show is the relationship between Alan Shore and Denny Crane. These charachers have so richly been brought to life by the remarkable talents of James Spader and William Shatner.

Who would have thought William Shatner of all people would go on to play one of the truly wonderful and eccentric characters on TV. You never know where the character is going to go, but you know you're in for one unbelieveable ride!

He is equally matched and more so in my eyes by that of James Spader. He continues to amaze me as to how he delivers superlative performances episode after episode. It's just staggering to watch his talent at work and it has been an absolute pleasure to have watched him in all his Alan Shore glory. During the 5 year run, he was at the very best of his game and not many could truly match him in this regard.

The relationship between the two is what makes the show truly great. Having watched the characters develop over the years, starting with "The Practice" has been pure joy and something that doesn't come along often.

I have also enjoyed watching the other characters througout it's run. It's great to see Candice Bergen display her wonderful talents yet again on the small screen. She gets better as she gets older! Her first episode on the show, "Schmidt Happens" is still one of my favourites and the banter between Bergen and Spader is one to behold.

Christian Clemenson and Tara Summers both deserve a special mention for both drawing out and making the characters of Jerry and Katie all their own. I could so easily watch both of them in their own spin-off!

And finally, the show would not be what it is without the glorious writing talents of David E Kelly. I just marvel at the writing and without it, there would be no Boston Legal.

As much as I hate to see the show disappear from the small screen so soon, it is better to get out on top and that is where it will always be!

Playboy 1996 Playmate Calendar Review

Not a bad Playmate video calendar, not one of their best but not bad, certainly not one of their worsts (and they have some bad ones, trust me). A run down of the girls: Kelly Galagher is cute, nice breasts, but her vignettes aren't that great. Cindy Brown is very pretty, her second scene encrusted in jewels (and nude) is very nice. Maria Checha gets very naked, but I didn't think she was that great. Stacy Sanchez is fantastic! Both of her vignettes are awesome. In the first one she has a country-western theme, and when she takes off that white dress to show off her statuesque body, it is mind-blowing. Amazonian figure with a really great rear. Her second sketch is great too, sort of a catwalk/fashion shoot theme. Lisa Marie Scott is next on the tape, she has a nice nude ballet sequence. Traci Adell is excellent, a gorgeous brunette with bewitching eyes. In her second segment, she does this artist's model/scupltor skit, and it is great. She starts out the skit topless, her awesome and beautiful bosom in full display for all to see, wearing little denim shorts, which she soon takes off and lets us get a good look at her anatomy. Nice. Rhonda Adams is a pretty blonde, though as Playboy has so many she doesn't really stand out. Her first segment with her giving a birthday party for herself (?!) is not bad, where she receives and tries on lingerie, but too brief. Her second segment sucks. Danelle Folta is next. Yes she is pretty, is great in the newstand specials, and has some good segments in other videos, but her two segments in this one aren't any good in my mind. Elise Bridge is kinda small-breasted and her very visible tan lines are distracting, she made no impression on me. Melissa Holiday was excellent, her first segment as a nude/topless magician's assistant, very nice, and the second one just plain great, lots of great breast shots. The last two, Victoria Zdrok and Julie Ciallini, don't do anything for me. I know Julie is a PMOY but I never thought her that great looking, and her chest was not that enticing. I know she (and Victoria) have their fans, but I am not one of them.All in all not a bad buy, worth it for Traci, Melissa, Stacy, and Cindy in my opinion. Gantz Live Action Movie : Perfect Answer DVD [ hottest movie 2011 ]-ENG DUB. Gantz has a rather bizarre storyline: Characters that appear to have died from one method or another appear moments later in a room with a giant black ball named (you guessed it!): Gantz. These characters have apparently been given a chance to live again by participating in a fight against a variety of supposed baddies from outer-space. The problem with the storyline being presented is that if these characters die while battling they die completely. No more second chances at living after losing all life during a Gantz battle! However, if you can beat a round (which usually lasts for twenty minutes for some whacked-out reason) you might be able to win some cool points that just might be redeemable for something pretty, well, nifty: a complete return to your normal life or a chance to bring back someone who has died.

Gantz The First Stage: Perfect Answer (Live Action Movie) Review

This is the Malaysian imported version. They named the DVD cover with the series name "gantz the first stage the perfect answer".

What you are getting is "the first stage" or really in the US it is just called "Gantz". It's movie number 1 of a 2 part series. The second stage is not out yet and from previews the US title will probably be "Gantz Perfect Answer"

Anyway, its a good movie, but don't expect both in this package as the second one isn't even out.

Also, I guess these sets are more expensive to import and they do have nice slip covers; but there are other cheaper import versions (without slip covers and without subtitles) that you can find. Just search Amazon for "Gantz live action". The Hong Kong imports are English dubbed and cost less than $20.

The US versions (non imported) aren't out yet (at the time I write this)
