For a change, the Gerard Depardieu whom we meet in Maitresse is relatively normal; it is the world around him which has gone slightly mad. Olivier(Depardieu)is a restless young man searching for a new job. After unsuccessfully selling magazine subscriptions, he and his partner resort to burglary. What they thought was a wealthy landlady's apartment turns out to be the studio of a dominatrix named Ariane. Caught, Olivier is instantly drawn to Ariane's atypical demeanor.
