Mr. Nanny Review

While I certainly believe that Hulk Hogan has screen presence surpassed only by a select few, this was a project that was somewhat troubled from the beginning. Hogan shows his full theatrical arsenal as Sean Armstrong in this adaptation of "Mr. Nanny" but the end result comes up a bit short.Creating a screen translation of William Burroughs' brilliantly intricate novel was a daunting task, and while the effort put forth in writing "Mr. Nanny" for the screen by Michael Gottlieb (who also directs) and Edward Rugoff was a noble one, it still falls short of Burroughs' wild vision. Burroughs himself, a key uncredited contributor to the film, was opposed to key casting decision. For instance, Gottlieb had his heart set on Sherman Helmsley for the role of Burt Wilson, Armstrong's manager. Burroughs remarked that Helmsley's work in the TV series "All in the Family" and "The Jeffersons" was nothing more than "visual flatulence," and he insisted on Sinbad taking that role to no avail. There was also the problem of toning down the frequent drug use and phallic imagery so prevalent in Burroughs' novel. While I agree that it would have been difficult to capture that particular essence of the book, I do believe that the writers could have done better than merely showing the villainous Thanatos (David Johansen) smoking marijuana while reading a copy of OUT magazine. This doesn't exactly capture the paranoid and druggily fantastic "wild boys" motif of the novel. Hogan does provide a certain degree of screen heat, but he can't do it alone. There are certain elements in this translation that I did enjoy. For one, the post-apocalyptic Amazon basin does bear an appropriate symbolic relationship to the single parent suburban home where most of the events of the film transpire. Plus, you can't fault Hogan. His is a valiant attempt to bring a literary masterpiece to new levels on the screen. In closing, READ THE BOOK. You won't be disappointed.
