Big Mountain Extreme Ski Movies: Respect and The Waiting Game (Institutions) Review

If you have ever fantasized about quitting your day job and making downhill skiing the main priority of your life, you can get a taste of that fantasy by watching this ski movie. Filled with beautiful scenery, extreme skiing, skier profiles, and a fitting soundtrack, The Waiting Game will have you feeling the anticipation for ski time.

The movie opens itself up with several skiiers sitting around a campfire telling about a ski fantasy or goal that they are waiting to have or had to wait for to happen. This theme of anticipation stories ties each scene of the film together. There are more skiiers in this film than should be listed in an article, with each one having their own action scene in a beautiful and famed ski location.

The film takes the viewer to several Utah locations, Haines and Valdez Alaska, and Jackson, Wyoming. Shots from the road travel are included, giving a sense of what the travel time must be like. The filmmakers also include some of each ski towns' scenic backdrop other than it's ski slopes. For example, the port of Valdez is shown before the Alaska ski scenes.

The soundtrack adds to the mood of each ski scene. Without music, an adrenaline rush trip down a slope would look like peaceful lines being drawn on a nice snowy background of your tv. The soundtrack of this film effectively helps the viewer to step into the mindset of the skier on screen.

Narration of the thoughts and reflections of these different people who have dedicated their lives to skiing peppers throughout the movie. Interview footage of Bill Briggs, the legendary Jackson Hole skiier who was the first to ski the Grand Tetons in 1971, shows that for those who make this lifestyle choice, it will be a choice without regret.

Briggs also plays his banjo and sings about skiing in the opening campfire scene. This turns into one of the films drawbacks. Skiiers are telling about what they are or have waited for at the same time, so you can't really understand Briggs or the skiiers.

The Waiting Game comes with a second disc of special features, including a music video of Briggs song. The video doesn't have the skiiers talking, so at least you get the opportunity to hear just the song. There is also an action only version of the film. My favorite on the second disc was the history of heliskiing in Alaska's Chugach mountains. A few product and company promos are included on the second disc. Overall the second disc really does add to the set - it isn't just a few things thrown together to make a set without adding anything worthy of viewing.

I am giving this film a four out of five. I am glad I took the time to check it out from my local library and watch it.

Amazon.com Review

Writer-director Meir Zarchi's controversial story of rape and revenge has lost none of its ability to shock viewers since it first gained notoriety in the late '70s. Camille Keaton (grand-niece of Buster Keaton and, later, Zarchi's wife) stars as a young woman who is terrorized and then brutally assaulted by four men while on vacation. After slowly pulling herself together, she methodically tracks down and butchers each of the perpetrators. Zarchi's film has been consistently accused of celebrating violence against women, and while the rape scenes are graphic, they also lack the voyeuristic qualities that earmark other similarly plotted exploitation films. If anything, Zarchi is guilty of awkward scripting; the dialogue is leaden, and Keaton's transformation from victim to avenger is too swift. But to label him a pornographer is wrong, and while the film is challenging--perhaps more than most audiences can bear--its depiction of the psychology of violence is undeniably powerful. --Paul Gaita

I Spit On Your Grave [VHS] Review

When movies first came out on video there were two legendary exploitation films I had to track down. One was "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and the other was "I Spit on Your Grave," which is actually the more memorable film of the pair overall (although I do grant the highest place to the "hook" scene in TCM). Director Meir Zarchi's 1978 film has become rather infamous, since critics hated it, audiences were outraged, and the film was banned in Germany and Great Britain. The story, such as it is, finds Jennifer Hill (Camille Keaton, Buster's grand-niece) out in the woods of Connecticut to work on a novel when she crosses the path of some local boys who decide she should be the first sexual partner for their mentally-disabled friend. When he cannot complete the rape, his friends do it for him. Then they decide that they are not done with Jennifer. At issue are not Jennifer's specific acts of revenge, including the infamous bathroom scene, but rather the series of brutal rapes that precede them. I do not want to meet anyone who is not disturbed by these rape scenes and I think it is fairly obvious that Zarchi intended to make audiences uncomfortable. In retrospect you have to wonder about all those movies with rape scenes that do NOT upset the audience (the current obvious exception that proves the rule would be what happens in "Monster" right before the first murder). But Zarchi certainly pours it on thick, absolutely assuring that things go beyond the tolerance level of anyone who watches this film. So the bottom line is that this film will upset you and it is therefore effective at doing exactly what it wants to do. I have always considered this an "X" rated movie although I would not consider it pornographic in the traditional sense. But it is a very disturbing film and I do not think I would want my kids to see it until after they graduate college (if ever). Anyone renting this film for cheap thrills is in for a shock. As I now understand it, this 1978 film was originally released as "Day of the Woman," but that rather innocuous title was replaced by the well known "I Spit on Your Grave," although the film was also screened as "I Hate Your Guts" and "The Rape and Revenge of Jennifer Hill." All of this is interesting since it seems the producers were trying to pass off this film with both higher and lover levels of pretention. The cult status here is more for the shock value than any cheap artistic pretentions, that is for sure. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? Tokyo Decadence [Region 2] Review

This movie isn't about a hooker, or S & M, though on the surface it seems like it is. Think about the name. Tokyo Decadence. Its about the 1980s and the changes in Japan during that time because of the economic boom. Its about fantasy. Its about what happens when you get "wealth without pride". The clash of the traditional and the modern producing a lost generation. OK, so its not the "best" movie ever, but if you put a little thought into it before you see it, you will get much more out of it. I really liked it though it may not be the most popular of movies. The movie was based on a book . . . so give it some slack.

Mozart - Don Giovanni (Salzburg Marionette Theater) Review

The Salzburg Marionette Theatre is a must for anyone visiting the magical city that gave us Mozart, Haydn and "The Sound of Music." After about 5 mins. you forget you're watching puppets. The music is a 1st-rate recording and slightly edited. Unfortunately the DVD is "PAL" and therefore not playable in the US (not well indicated). I watched it on my laptop, though hardly a good way to judge. I have seen about 6 different productions, and continue to be enchanted. Pity the DVD isn't viewable on a TV, so those unable to go to Salzburg can enjoy a glimpse. The late Sir Peter Ustinov's commentaries punctuate the performance and help the viewer follow the story (There are no subtitles, unfortunately). The special features tell you about the theatre and behind-the-scenes peeks. Regrettably I returned my DVD and wish I could buy more!

Product Description

Working with elements of the traditional horror genre - second sight, ESP, warnings from the dead, a mad killer - and cinematography of disquieting beauty and dreamlike sense of dislocation, director Nicolas Roeg weaves a fabric of anxiety that questions all reality. The evocative use of the back streets of Venice is a sinister participant in the action based on the novel by Daphne du Maurier. This intensely erotic and macabre film boasts outstanding performances by Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland.

Dont Look Now Review

DON'T LOOK NOW is a film for people with a particular taste, and the unwary viewer will either be pleasantly or unpleasantly shocked. From a seemingly simple premise -- a couple trying to overcome their daughter's death, and the odd psychic they meet while staying in Venice -- director Nicholas Roeg creates a thriller/horror movie/dazzling puzzles that slowly infects your mind and then shocks you with its bizarre twists.Be warned: this isn't a movie for everyone. It relies on visual puzzles and clues and an incredible lot of misdirection for its effect. This might bore some people; it had me riveted with the first scene and held me up through the mind-bending conclusion. Like THE SIXTH SENSE, SLEUTH, THE USUAL SUSPECTS, and THE OTHERS, the film is playing a massive deception on the audience and the characters, engaing in a strange game that pays off in an incredibly satisfying (if devastating) way. Every time you think you know what kind of story you're watching, the movie starts veering in another direction, and only the finale finally makes the purpose of the plot clear. Director Roeg, a former cinematographer, crafts an eerie vision of Venice as damp, mouldy, and crumbling, and his visual compositions have a startling quality that adds to the bizarre and alienated moodof the film. Although few movies have directly copied the story of DON'T LOOK NOW, its directorial style has become the standard for such filmmakers as David Lynch, M. Night Shyamalan, and David Fincher. This is a landmark piece of work and worth viewing if you enjoy films full of mystery and intelligence (for example, the movies I listed above) and unusual visual style.
