Product Description

A tragic summer, long forgotten by four friends, returns to haunt the now estranged group when the body of a young woman and a baby are uncovered in the pet cemetery on an ancestral estate.

Fatal Inversion [VHS] Review

"A Fatal Inversion" presents us with a mystery. The bones of a woman and child are discovered in an animal cemetery near the stately Wyvis Hall. It turns out the bones have been there for more than ten years. But who was it that was buried there? And why?Adam Verne-Smith is a man with a haunted past. He and three others know the truth of what happened in the summer of 1979 at Wyvis Hall, which Adam re-named Ecalpemos ("someplace" spelt backwards). Adam and his arrogant friend Rufus meet again for the first time in twelve years, trying to keep one step ahead of the police to avoid the truth coming out. We go back in time twelve years to Wyvis Hall, and see how events built up to a crisis point.I actually found this television adaptation was better than Ruth Rendell's novel. It was well-cast. Saira Todd was very good as the mentally-unbalanced Zosie. She looked child-like, as the book described her. Douglas Hodge and Jeremy Northam were also convincing with their roles. The character of Rufus was very intimidating and callous. Adam looked pained and guilt-ridden. I noticed with the scenes set in the present that there was a lot of blue. Even the light had a bluish tinge. Is there any significance in that? "A Fatal Inversion" is different from your regular "whodunnit". We know who did the crime but not who the crime was done to. Right until the end we are left guessing. This is drama at its best. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? Martin Fierro (1968) [VHS] Review

An epic , by definition is a long narrative poem . The original version of Martin Fierro appeared to us in print in 1872 , in the form of long narration . To continue the definition of epic , this long narrative poem then treats a single heroic character (Martin Fierro) and places him in an historic context . His maintaining a silence throughout the film is indicative to an epic masterpiece because it has captured "the gaucho", with all of his cultural tendencies , meaning that of solidarity above all else , and frozen him onto the screen. The "extras" in the Argentinian llanuras (plains) are absolutely important to the understanding of the film's historic context. During this decade , the governemnt of Argentina forced the gauchos to kill the indigenous population (the indians), murder them in cold blod . Today , if Martin Fierro were wondering those fields, he would find no people, no "extras". The filming of Martin Fierro's panoramic sequences are also essential to the idea of epic films. There he is (Martin Fierro), standing on kilometres of land, all alone at times , desolate . That is symbolic of how he , as a citizen felt during that time . It is also symbolic of the feelings the indians had as well, strangers on their own land . This film proves something .

A Spinal Tap Reunion: The 25th Anniversary London Sell-Out Review

While nothing, absolutely nothing, can compete with the original "This is Spinal Tap" for comedic genius, this DVD is a brilliant work in it's own right. While it is true that the majority (maybe 75 percent or so) of the film is a live show shot in the Royal Albert Hall in 1992, there are numerous interludes and links to keep the satire quotient pegged. All in all the music is performed well, but some of the newer materiel falls a bit flat compared to the "Smell the Glove" set. Songs like "Cash on Delivery" and "Clam Caravan", while vaguely amusing are not up to the normal Tap standards (although Nigel playing the clarinet is quite a sight), and the Rap version of "Sex Farm" was just plain annoying. Having said that, there are moments of inspired brilliance here. During "Stonehenge" they have the opposite problem they had in the original...the monument is too huge to get in the theatre. During "Big Bottom" all three play basses, which is not only funny to think about, but very funny to actually hear. The guitar pyrotechnics and way over the top soloing of Nigel Tufnel continue in "Diva Fever", a forgettable song without the solo. During this particular solo (during which Derek takes a cab and gets a huge meal at a restaurant, while David has a cucumber facial and pedicure) Nigel plays his guitars by throwing horseshoes at them, juggling while playing with his feet, etc.Interspersed with the concert footage are numerous links, most of which are utterly brilliant. We learn that Nigel has invented a folding wine glass (he still needs the rubber hinges), and has founded 'Travel for Animals', an organization that allows animals (in this case his ferret, Trevor) to travel with their own passport. We learn that Derek goes on his father's telephone sanitizing service ('Sani Phone') business calls with him to help make ends meet, and has invested in not one, but two unbuilt London apartments, the net result of which is that he has to stay in a hotel while in London. David and his wife now work part time at a summer soccer camp in California and she runs 'Potato Republic', a store specializing in itchy Irish clothing. Additionally, David and Nigel visit their boyhood home of Squatney, and reminisce. All of these bits are inspired as are the guest spots featuring things like Mel Torme singing "Big Bottom" and a member of Primus with a picture of Derek tattooed on his bicep. My only irritant with this DVD is that some of the songs are incorrectly named in the liner notes for some reason; for instance, "Big Bottom" is called "Bum Cakes" in the credits. All in all, I think this is a wonderful DVD, and is well worth the money. If you are a true Tap fan, you must own this! Product Description

I think it's probably impossible not to be charmed out of your socks by Junior High School" said film critic Roger Ebert. And I must admit I totally agree with him, which is not something I commonly do; simply put, you'd have to be a real scrooge not to find some sort of pleasure in this one. The plot is rather simply, has a boy (David Stewart) of about fourteen trying to summon up the courage to ask the school's prettiest girl (Karen Capelle) to attend a party with him. As his best friend (Kirk Burnett) gives him all sorts of advice on how to accomplish this, teachers, bullies and the class nerd (Mikal Robert Taylor) do much to get in the way. Somewhat oddly, this is a musical as well as a comedy/drama; it all works quite well, though, is really a lot of fun. The kids were all non-professional actors/actresses who attended Van Nuys Junior High in California. One of them happens to be the now famous pop singer Paula Abdul.

Junior High School Review

I first saw this either on pre-cable poor quality "ON TV" or early HBO, late 70's or very early 80's and taped it. As I have a musical background and have worked with kids for a
living, I found this 38 minute short very entertaining, if amateurish to the extreme. Of course, if one takes the time to learn about this short, they
will realize it had almost no actors with previous experience. However, the songs and the choreography are rather complex and clever, and the story of
a boy in the 8th or 9th grade having a crush on a girl who is interested in older guys is timeless, and the songs and styles portrayed are representative
of Junior High (today called middle school) in the 50's through much of the 70's. There is the obnoxious nerd with the briefcase, the advisor friend who
is too shy himself, the jealous girl who plots to trap our hero "Jerry" into taking her to the party that Sherrie (Paula Abdul) is planning. And Jerry of
course wants to bring his crush Lori, but can't seem to get an opportunity to ask her. The songs deal with shop classes, gym class, girls with small busts,
(The famous "Itty Bitty Titty Committee"), The Party, Advice, Their Feelings, and the Finale, "Junior High School". Many songs have 2 or 3 parts that in
the final verse are overlaid and sound great. The real pleasure for me was learning the songs through repeated viewings, since the acting is not the films
forte, and the story, while fun and satisfying is not full of surprises. Some undoubtedly will watch this once and be done with it, or even stop it in
the middle because it looks so cheesy. But Roger Ebert gave this a fine review, and if you can only enjoy highly sophisticated fare or action films, then
look elsewhere. I just paid $65 for a commercial VHS, as my old copy was very poor, and the short has never been put on DVD. I have probably watched it
2 or 3 dozen times, and still like to show it to others or occasionally just watch it to hear the songs.

The Weavers: Wasn't That a Time! Review

Our fathers bled at Valley Forge, the snow was red with blood
Their faith was worn at Valley Forge,
Their faith was brotherhood.

Wasn't that a time, wasn't that a time?
A time to try the soul of men,
Wasn't that a terrible time?

Brave men who fought at Gettysburg now lie in soldiers' graves
But there they stemmed the rebel tide
And there their faith was saved.

Wasn't that a time, wasn't that a time?
A time to try the soul of men,
Wasn't that a terrible time?

The wars are long, the peace is frail, the madmen come again.
There is no freedom in a land where fear and hate prevail.

Isn't this a time, isn't this a time?
A time to try the soul of men,
Isn't this a terrible time?

"Songs are dangerous," says the old, sick man, Lee Hays. "The Weavers sang about freedom, civil rights..." and about justice, fairness and brotherhood. Says Ronnie Gilbert, one of the Weavers, "We felt that if we sang loud enough and strong enough and hopefully enough, somehow it would make a difference." Hays, Pete Seeger, Gilbert and Fred Hellerman came together in 1948 and formed the Weavers. They didn't make much of an impression until a year later when they performed at the Village Vanguard. Thanks to Gordon Jenkins who heard them and insisted that Decca Records sign them, they hit the big time with "Goodnight, Irene" and "Tzena, tzena, tzena." As one person said, they suddenly moved authentic folk songs into mainstream America. All four were committed progressives. Hays and Seeger were long-time union supporters going back to the terrible times of the Thirties. In the late Forties, when anti-Communist demagogues began to scare the daylights out of most Americans with accusations, Congressional investigations and fear, it only took a couple of years to finish off the Weavers, or so it seemed. They disbanded finally in 1952 after two years of blacklisting. Decca cancelled their contract, radio stations wouldn't play their records, and it was tough even to get gigs at state fairs. Three years later they came together for a one-time concert at Carnegie Hall and almost single-handedly set the new wave of protest folk-singing on its course. Although Seeger left in 1958 to return to a solo career (and remained banned from network television for years), the Weavers continued on until 1963.

It's now 1980 and Hays looks in the camera and says, "I'm Lee Hays...more or less." He's not well and is confined to a wheelchair. Both legs had to be amputated because of diabetes. He decides to invite Seeger, Gilbert and Hellerman, and their spouses and kids, to come visit him, to have a picnic and sit around and sing together one more time. (And, yes, A Mighty Wind used this in a gentle and affectionate way.) A camera crew will record everything. His house is small, but it has a large backyard, a mulch pile which Hays attends to and plenty of room for outdoor tables and folding chairs. The four of them with friends, relatives and Hays' neighbors get together and eat ham and cake. Then Hays, Hellerman, Gilbert and Seeger sit down to reminisce and sing. Everyone gathers around them. At one point Seeger suggests doing what they're doing again...but at Carnegie Hall. And now we watch them rehearse. We see all that gray hair, the receding hairlines, the extra poundage, as well as their professionalism. They are as committed to social justice as they were when they started out. They still sing just as passionately and joyously as ever.

Finally the Carnegie Hall night arrives. The two concerts were sell-outs as soon as they were announced. The Hall is packed. Everyone is smiling. Then onto the stage walk Seeger and Hellerman. Gilbert pushes Hays in his wheelchair. The crowd roars, then settles down, and the four start singing. If you don't have an emotional moment at this point, then you must have missed the last 60 years of this nation's history. "If I Had a Hammer," written by Hays and Seeger in 1949, is just as fresh as the first time they sang it, and with just as much meaning. If "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine" doesn't choke you up, even sung 30 years later still by Gilbert and Seeger, you've never loved anyone. And the songs crying out for justice are still valid. "We know this concert will be our last," says Hays, "but the music will go on because it always has."

Hays died the next year. In accordance with his wishes, he was cremated and his neighbors gathered in his backyard where they mixed his ashes into his mulch pile.

Wasn't That a Time is a tremendously moving and joyous documentary, especially if you grew up loving how the Weavers sang and what they sang about. There was a VHS tape released many years ago which has long been out of print. If you're prepared to make a substantial investment, you might occasionally find a copy for sale. For many of us, we're just glad we pressed the "record" button on our tape recorder when, years ago, PBS put it on the air. This is one of those wonderful shows that should have a restored DVD release.
