Billed as a comedy, Volpone also includes elements of tragedy and even animal fable (Volpone is Italian for 'fox'). In essence, it's a dark satire on greed and lust, and remains Jonson's most performed work.The action takes place in seventeenth-century Venice, over the course of one day. The tale twists and turns, as all the characters attempt to deceive each other, until the whole scheme finally collapses, with disastrous consequences for Volpone.

Volpone (Education Pack) Review

Ben Jonson was both a friend of and a rival playwright to Shakespeare. Jonson's plays were much admired in his own time but his penchant for topical satire renders them less accessible than Shakespeare's and something of an acquired taste (despite high praise from T.S. Eliot). VOLPONE is generally considered his masterwork and, as such, it has become a standard anthology piece.
Despite this masterpiece status, this play is seldom performed in this country and, until now, the most readily located video version was in French(!). So fans of Jacobean drama owe Stage on Screen a debt for this live recording of a 2010 stage production at the Greenwich Theatre, London.
Though I had not heard of this theatre or of any of the actors in this production, it is obvious from the opening scene that this is a fully professional production. Clearly, the actors are not only talented and expressive but up to the vocal demands of performing a drama from this period.
In addition, the production team has obviously been at pains to see that the action moves as quickly as we believe it would have on the essentially bare stage of the time. The action takes place on an uncluttered all-black set that changes shape and proportion quickly. The costumes are colorful and suggest the style of the period without being slavish recreations.
Insofar as I can judge the technical aspects of this recording, I found it close to faultless. The photography is sharp, the blocking and camerawork clear, and the sound recording as good as I have ever heard for a production with a live audience. (I found a single brief passage in which I could not make out what the actor was saying).
I really would like to have given this DVD a full 5 stars.
I had only one reservation, but it was a BIG one. I did not find the actor who played VOLPONE interesting either to watch or to listen to. Almost every other actor in this production seemed to me to have more stage presence and greater vocal brilliance. If only the MOSCA (Mark Hatfield) or the VOLTORE (Tim Treloar) of the piece had played the lead instead.
And since I seem to be giving advce to the director (Elizabeth Freestone), I have to add that I don't think there is anything that can be done to make the Sir Politic Would-be subplot funny again. Next time, just cut it.

I really found the "EYESercise" DVD helpful in conveying effective vision-strengthening exercises -- all the exercises were clearly described and demonstrated visually with excellent video production quality. And it's a bargain at this price -- better production quality and exercise mix than the "See Clearly" tapes, for a mere fraction of the cost. I would place this DVD at the top of my library of fitness videos -- and this is definitely a "fitness" program you can work with. It comes with both a helpful booklet and personal fitness log book -- both excellent.

Everybody's Special [VHS] Review

When I saw the three episodes of "Bear..." on this DVD I was very impressed. I have to say it turned the series into my favorite program to share with my son.

The disc starts with an episode dealing with Opposites, and it shows how important it is for opposites to exist, in order to completement us where we fall short (Bear's chat with Tutter in the kitchen when the mouse is struggling to reach a glass, and then Bear has a hard time reaching a spoon that he dropped under the fridge are a great example of this).

The second episode showcases Benny "the bat", a new fella to most of the animals in the Big Blue House, which gives most of them the creeps. As Bear and Treelo introduce them to the winged friend, they begin to realize that as different as he looks, they all share something in common with him.

Last, the closing episode emphasizes charity as a value, as the entire crowd in the house pulls together to organize a yardsale to benefit the muskrat's who lost their homes. Intertwined with some fun moments with Tutter's undecided about letting go some of his junk, this episode takes the whole concept home, leaving behind a trail of great benefit for your child to learn from.

After this DVD, I declare myself a fan of Bear! "Welcome to the Blue House!"

This video was first release in the early eighties, and if it contains the same same content it is great self-defense video for women. The video provides infomation on rape provention and the rapist. Then the video instructs women on how to defend themselves with no holds barred techniques; kicks, strikes and grabs, which women of all skill levels can master. This should be a must see for all women. I have been in the martial arts for a long time and have viewed a great deal of material, some bad and some good, this video would make a fine additional to your self-defense library.

German Drama/Comedy

Wolfang Woeller (played by Fritz Wepper, US viewer may know him from "Cabaret" with Liza Minelli) is the mayor of the bavarian (Germany) smalltown Kaltenthal who want make money with any projects like selling the Abbey Kaltenthal and to building a congress centre.

Sister Lotte (called by the mayor: the black mamba) (Jutta Speidel) is returning from a mission work in Africa to the Abbey Kaltenhal and is not really happy about. One Reason is her mother superior which she don't like. But much more trouble makes Mayjor Woeller. Sister Lotte is ready to fight against him with help of the sisters of the Abbey: Sister Felicitas (she's smoking and drinking all the time), Sister Agnes (has a Chicken called Lady Gaga.

The Abbey needs all the time money and discover in their dark cellar a secret mixtur for a Klostergeist (Schnapps). Also they find a treasure map, and, and...

But Lotte also has friends in the Rathaus: Frau Laban (called Mata Hari) - Mayjors secretary.

Other characters are Sister Hildegard (who has success as crime-novel writer), Herr Stolpe (who's in love to Sister Hildegard and is helping with her novels), Bishop Rossbauer (a good friend to mother superior).

The german TV Serie is now running in their 12th Season and a running gag is the last episode of each season, when they organize a Charity-Event with Talent-Show (mayor Woellers is appearing each time with a special show!).

Each Season has 13 episodes and lives with their actors/actress, very good (and funny) dialogues/stories.

The DVD contains only german soundtrack. Screen-Format is 16:9 and Sound in Stereo.

Filmed in and around Landshut (Bavaria).

FAZIT: really fantastic german comedy.

I own video version of this movie. Also the DVD. Very disappointed with amateurish print on DVD. Color is way off- when we talk about "red Indians" , the people in this movie have bright pink faces!!! I have decent tech equipment,decent TV. Was this bootlegged in someone's basement????
