In hindsight, Paramount's decision to terminate their relationship with Preston Sturges occupies the region between 'insane', 'irresponsible' and that old standby, 'stupid'. Sturges' subsequent relocation to Fox was, of course, utterly disastrous; which makes UNFAITHFULLY YOURS as much a miracle as it is a great comedy. His stock company (save for a very funny Rudy Vallee) was now a thing of the past; although the cast he assembled here is game and lively, Edgar Kennedy foremost among them. Nevertheless, UNFAITHFULLY YOURS is Sturges' second consecutive attempt (after MAD WEDNESDAY) to move away from his trademark of the inspired dialogue-comedy and towards a more visual (or in this case, audio-visual) farce. Fortunately for us, he succeeded brilliantly (not that it cut him any ice in an increasingly desperate studio-system that not only didn't know what to do with its few geniuses but began to openly despise them). Rex Harrison plays a vain, high-strung symphony conductor who -thanks inadvertantly to his cuckold of a brother in law (Vallee, naturally)- begins to suspect his wife of having an affair. What follows is an amazingly supple and creative variation of the boudoir-farce, highlighted by the famous virtuoso segments in which Harrison daydreams of killing her to the strains of Rossini, Wagner & Tchaikovsky, as well as the classic finale where cold-bloodedness and high culture both are reduced to slapstick bumbling (silent comedy, always near & dear to Sturges' heart, is a definite influence here). Ignored on its release, UNFAITHFULLY YOURS, combining as it does comedic disciplines of music, dialogue and sight-gags, has since been elevated to its rightful position as a masterwork. Unfortunately, this re-evaluation came too late to rescue Preston Sturges from the personal and professional oblivion the know-nothings (in and out of Hollywood) were remorselessly consigning him to. See this movie and help redress this outrage.

Building a Router Table [The New Yankee Workshop Series] Review

Around 2002, Norm Abrams New Yankee Workshop had an episode 0301 called "Deluxe Router Station." In it, Norm builds a router table with drawers for bits, tools, and accessories. It is a fine project but I always wondered about the original version.

The original version was simply called "Router Table" and is episode 813. The NYW no longer lists or sells this video or the measured drawing. I was lucky enough to find a seller on Amazon that had a like new copy and bought it.

Since I now have both videos, it's interesting comparing the two similar projects. In some ways, the original had better features but the newer one did improve on a few things as well.

The primary difference between the two versions is the dust collection. On the original, it had a chase inside that dust fell into the bottom and was picked up by the vacuum. The fence had a covered box that was over a large hole that allowed dust to be sucked into this chase as well. This eliminates the need for a second hose and extra fittings for the vacuum connection. I like this idea over the arrangement in the newer version.

The biggest improvement in the newer version was the dust door is hinged now and they went back to the original idea of two large drawers on the bottom instead of one with a divider. The two large drawers were shown in the inspiration for the original but for some reason, Norm made the original with the one large drawer with divider.

I think having both videos will help me build a router table that incorporates the best features of both projects. It's too bad that the NYW doesn't offer a video showing both projects on one disc as I think others like me would like to be able to compare the two and pick and choose features.

Too Outrageous Animation Review

I bought this out of curiosity thought hmmmm Expanded Entertainment made a third Outragous animation. So I ploped down 17.95 for the tape and waited about a week and I got it. Then when I looked at the box cover I was like hmmmm.... sure doesn't look like a outragous animation but when I put the VHS tape into the vcr, sure enough it was. It had the same animation sequence like the others and the animations on the tape are well not "OUTRAGEOUS" but more of the lines of weird, and strange. Two examples of this would have to be "Little Red Riding Hood", and "Organ House" In little red riding hood the animation looks like it was done by five 2nd graders. The story of litlle red riding but more the lines of more sexuality in it.The animation is pretty bad and the story really makes no sence. Made me really wonder, like why would a 10 year old girl know how to preform sexual acts like blowjobing, and 69ing? Then I also made another question "Is little red ridding hood from the ghetto?" Really nothing else I can sa about Little red Riding hood but lets now move on to Organ House. This little weird animation opens up by saying "ORGAN HOUSE IS NOT FOR THE FAINTEST OF HEARTS". So am like "oh kay, let's see what we got here". And I watched it and there wasn't anything scary there I even showed it to my easly scared to anything and after watching it he said "WHAT...This is not scary HA HA HA HA are those suppost to be Organs GA HA HA HA HA HA. And thats saying a LOT. Well in organ house it a "OLD" CG Animation for the early 90s (like 1992 I think) and we get shown the outside of the Common "Classic white" Scary home. Then we get shown the interor of the home, which is organs. Then near the ending out of no where this skeleton comes out and says welcome. Also the animation piece is one mintue and I question if they "cut" some of it out. Well other than those 2 animation pieces I would say the rest are funny as hell.There is this one animation called Guano! which sort of reminds me of Newgrounds R.A.B. What it is shorts on shorts about werid animals with big noses that do micheveous stuff. Also 2 Things need to be cleared up 1.)there are 27 animations (inculding a animation called Werid Beard which is spliced into 5 parts.) 2. the tape time ends at 98 mins not 88 mins. 3rd The sexuality in the fim is about 70% Violence about 85% and Boring 5%. This tape has to be the 3rd most well produced animation VHS tape I have seen in years. So I would advise to get this tape for people that LOVE animation, Rare VHS tape collectors because I don't think u can't find this tape for under 33 dollars which is pretty rare in VHS standards. So if u got the money enjoy some of the weridest, and possibley funny animated shorts you've ever seen!

South Pacific [DVD+CD] [1958] [DVD] (2005) Rossano Brazzi; Mitzi Gaynor Review

I first saw South Pacific when it was released in 1958 at the age of 10, and remember being totally overwhelmed by the orchestrations, performances and photography. Over the years I have regularly heard the film trashed by critics and many members of the public, so I was curious to see how I would respond to it now when I recently bought the video. Well, maybe it's just me, but I found the film as thrilling and beautiful as I did forty years ago. I agree with everyone else that it was a mistake to use those colored filters in many of the sequences, but the film still packs a heck of an emotional whallop, and I think along with The King and I stands out as the most successful of the Rogers and Hammerstein shows put on film. The weakest of the cast is John Kerr, who is somewhat wooden; however, Juanita Hall is magnificent as Bloody Mary (she will never be surpassed in the role she createwd on Braodway), Rossano Brazzi is thoroghly convincing as Emille DeBeque (even if he was dubbed by Giorgio Tozzi), and Mitzi Gaynor gives an unforgettable performance as Nelly Forbrush. Of all of the criticism one hears of South Pacific, to me the most puzzling is the bashing of Mitzi Gaynor, who to me is not only excellent but perfection in the role. I realize a lot of this probably stems from anger that Mary Martin didn't get the role and is basically sour grapes, but the fact is Ms. Martin was too old to be convincing in 1958. The scenes in which Ms. Gaynor struggles with her small-town prejudices are moving and very real, and when Bloody Mary brings Liat to her to find Lieutenant Cable, who has been killed, it breaks one's heart. Anyway, the movie still knocks me out, even if that makes me, as Nelly Forbrush calls herself, a "knucklehead." The incredible photography, gorgeous music, and theme of the need to triumph over bigotry which is still so relevant even today, makes this film a 5-star winner in my book. As trite as it sounds, "They don't make 'em like that anymore!"
