Dear Charles, Mikey, Guy, and Mariana,

I would like to extend my hearty congratulations to all of you for the Woods Hole Film Festival Selection honor--you certainly deserve it!!

The movie is fabulous: it gives such a vivid picture of life in Oaxaca--and it is beautifully filmed. I loved the water rippling and the incredible footage of the man breathing with the oxen. The film hits on so many development themes: poverty, migration, remittances, resource allocation, and most interestingly, I would say, their culture of work. It was so powerful when the elderly woman says that the trout farm won't succeed because "they don't love fish." And that is a wonderful contrast to the theme woven throughout of their love for maize.

Five classes of my students--both Master's and doctoral candidates in International Community Economic Development-- have benefited from watching Charles' films and hearing his insights into them. I've used "Starter Pack" to frame the food security dilemma in Malawi in my Policy Analysis Classes over the past 4 years. Most recently, Si no Llueve was perfect for the poverty section of my "Principles and Practices of Development" class. It launched us into a rich discussion of poverty's relativity, especially with half of the students from Africa. It was great to have Charles there representing the project and sharing your students' responses, as well. Charles, during the class after the one you visited, our debrief on the film focused mainly on the sources of poverty in the featured communities. Afterwards, one of my students suggested that it would be useful to apply SWAT analysis to the film. This would give the students a framework for elaborating on the local opportunities and resources in the community, rather than dwelling on their (relative) poverty.

Charles, Mikey and all of you who contributed to the film, thanks for sharing your work and artistry with my students--I will try to spread the word about your award through my networks . . .
