  • 2-Video Set taught by Stacy Phillips with Dave Kiphuth, guitar and vocals
  • Composer: Stacy Phillips

Product Description

Here is a complete course in which Stacy Phillips unlocks the secrets of playing authentic bluegrass fiddle. These information-packed lessons are aimed at basic players as well as violinists who play classical, jazz or old-time music and want to learn the nuances of bluegrass style.

Stacy concentrates on some classic songs, showing you how to give each one a typical bluegrass flavor and create a hot fiddle solo in the styles of Benny Martin, Kenny Baker, Chubby Wise, Jimmy Buchanan, Bobby Hicks and others. With his encyclopedic knowledge of bluegrass style and history, he breaks each piece down with clarity and precision. Stacy fills you in on the underlying principles behind the licks, so you gain musical knowledge that will be helpful in any style you decide to play.

Throughout this course Stacy provides in-depth, detailed advice on all aspects of basic fiddling, including slurs, double stops, slides, bowing patterns and other essential techniques. He starts you with a solo that has been used on a host of classic songs, including Why Did You Wander? Gonna Paint the Town and On My Way Back to the Old Home. This solo illustrates much of the bedrock of bluegrass fiddling. Stacy takes a typical solo apart note-by-note, analyzing how and why each phrase is played in the bluegrass tradition. Other songs that Stacy examines include "Take This Hammer," "Jimmy Brown the Newsboy," "Long Journey Home," "All the Good Times are Past and Gone," and "Salty Dog Blues."

Bluegrass Fiddle Boot Camp [VHS] Review

In an earlier review I gave this DVD two stars and complained (kinda bitterly) about Mr. Phillips not teaching the solos note for note.

I am upgrading to 4 stars and revising the review because I don't think I really gave it justice. While it's true that he doesn't teach the solos note for note, there is so much really important information here about what makes bluegrass fiddling sound like bluegrass, rather than, say, oldtime, folk or country fiddling, that I think it deserves a higher rating. However, be aware, this is a DVD for someone who most emphatically already knows how to play fiddle (AKA violin) and knows it well. You will not get any hand holding, other than a bit of discussion of using a numeric system to identify notes and chords, though I'd be surprised if anyone could progress their playing to the level required by this DVD and not know numeric notation for notes and chords.

Bottom line: to use this DVD you must be proficient on your instrument and be able to either:
- read music
- Learn by ear from fast playing
- use software to strip audio out of a DVD and then slow it down (that's what I did)

If you can meet those requirements, you will find this to be an incredibly rich resource for bluegrass fiddle style. It addresses everything from specific interval choices for doublestops, when and where to use slides, when to use slurs, how to use anticipation and syncopation, and on and on. If you study this DVD, you will sound like a real bluegrass fiddler. For all you country fiddlers, folks fiddlers, irish fiddlers, oldtime fiddlers and violinists who always wanted to get the magic of that driving bluegrass sound, this DVD is for you. Just be aware, it is not intended for those who are still learning their instrument.

As a final note, to make up for my deficits as fast by-ear learner, I used 'Switch Sound File Converter Plus' from NCH Software to strip the audio tracks out of the DVD, and 'The Amazing Slow Downer' from Roni Music to slow them down enough to learn the notes. And no, I am not affiliated with either of those companies, I'm just a customer who likes their stuff.

Quiz Show Review

Although not a reason this movie is so good, I would like to begin by stating that as a graduate of Ouachita Baptist University of Arkadelphia, Arkansas, I believe this is the only movie ever made that mentions Arkadelphia. And not just once, but twice! There are many, many reasons this movie succeeds so marvelously, but I would like to focus on three.First, this movie benefits from an exceedingly fine cast. Not merely the leads, but many of the lesser roles are filled with extremely good actors and actresses. While Ralph Fiennes, John Tuturro, and Rob Morrow all shine in the leads, lesser parts are filled with people like David Paymer, Hank Azaria, Mira Sorvino, and Martin Scorsese. I was especially impressed by the always superb but underutilized Paul Scofield (who won the Oscar portraying Thomas More in A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS). He seems the very embodiment of the man of reason, erudition, and courtesy portraying Mark van Doren, and his pain upon learning his beloved son has lost his teaching position at Columbia is one of the great poignant moments in the film. Look very carefully at the scene where several attractive coeds interrupt Ralph Fiennes and Rob Morrow and you will spot Calista Flockhart (a.k.a. Ally McBeal).A second reason this film succeeds so well is its tremendous period feel. The movie looks and feels like the late 1950s at every second. QUIZ SHOW does a great job of [pulling] you in and giving you an almost tangible sense of time and place. Finally, the movie is easily one of the most accurate historical films I have ever seen, although drama is never sacrificed for the mere sake of being accurate. If one has done any reading about the scandals or perhaps if one remembers the events, the film constantly impresses with the amount of accurate detail it contains. Too often when watching a movie dealing with historical events, one can become irritated of the events are inaccurately portrayed. For instance, although LAWRENCE OF ARABIA is a truly great movie, Peter O'Toole was nearly a foot taller than the real T. E. Lawrence, which is a huge problem, since Lawrence's self-consciousness about his short stature was a major factor in his self-image. There are no such moments such as this in QUIZ SHOW.But if you watch, or rewatch, this film, please note those references to Arkadelphia! My undergraduate hometown! Predator/Predator 2 [Blu-ray] Review

This double feature Predator/Predator 2 Blu-ray (Own the Moments) was released by Fox home Entertainment in May 2012. It initially contained the 2010 Ultimate Hunter Edition Blu-ray with the modern MPEG-4 AVC video codec and several special features and extras, including a trailer for Predators. Several purchasers of the double feature have confirmed this on various forums. NOTE: This review does not apply to the Predator Collection released in October 2010. That release has always contained the Ultimate Hunter Edition of Predator.

I received an email from Amazon customer service that states this double feature now contains the 2008 release, which has no extras or special features and uses an older, inferior MPEG-2 AVC video codec. I sent an email to Foxconnect asking them to verify the version of Predator that is currently included in this double feature release. I will post their response here if I receive definitive information. (EDIT) 2/14/2013. I have exchanged emails with Foxconnect, the contact for Fox Home Entertainment. I detailed the differences between the 2008 and 2010 releases of Predator for them and asked which release this double feature contains. They refused to tell me anything, other than it was a Blu-ray of the 1987 movie Predator.(EDIT) 3/11/2013. Please read the comments for additional information. Everyone who has commented has received the 2010 Ultimate Hunter Edition with this double feature.

At this point, my conclusion is that they may have been using this Own the Moments release as a vehicle to get rid of some unsold inventory of the 2008 Blu-ray release. Since everyone who has commented on this review has confirmed that they have received the Ultimate Hunter Edition, the email from Amazon customer service was probably incorrect. The most recent response from customer service regarding this issue is that they relied on information from their inventory dept.

There are strong opinions on which of these two releases is superior. Before purchasing this item, be sure to check the reviews of the individual releases for the 2008 and the 2010 before you take a chance on purchasing this double feature.

Frankly, you are better off buying the individual releases, to guarantee that you are getting the version you prefer.

I gave this review one star because of the conflicting information on content. It does not reflect my opinion of the individual releases.

The Forsyte Saga: Complete Series [Regions 2 & 4] Review

Possibly the greatest TV miniseries of all time, it is wonderful that it has been released with great care and pride in this marvelous DVD set. What sets this particular adaptation apart from others, especially the recent (2002) version, is the outstanding ensemble acting and rich characterizations. For example, as Soames, compare Eric Porter's crisp, impeccable diction in this version with Damian Lewis's mushy delivery in the 2002 version. Compare the delightful, comic realization of James (Soames's father), played by John Welsh in 1969, with the indistinguishable-from-all-the-other-Forsytes character in 2002. Most compelling, compare Nyree Dawn Porter as Irene in 1969, with... well, there really is no comparison here.Of course, visually, this version suffers compared to last year's. It's shot in black and white, mostly on stage sets. Clearly, they used very few takes (another tribute to the actors), as minor defects like coats falling off racks, cameras getting bumped, slightly muffed lines are retained. But, really, who cares when you're watching the finest combination of acting and screenwriting ever put on TV?This DVD not only contains the entire set of 26 fifty-minute episodes, but also additional material: cast interviews, behind-the-scenes, even deleted scenes and outtakes. Altogether, a beautiful job. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you?Yes No Report abuse | PermalinkCommentComments (5)
