Gremlins Review

It follows a somewhat conventional monster movie plot. An ordinary guy witnesses his unusual but cute cuddly pet spawn a horde of evil Gremlins. He tries to warn the authorities, but they don't believe him until the creatures show up and go on a rampage throughout the town. Like in many monster movies, a plan is devised to destroy them, which works, but then there's still one left which needs to be defeated.

Every monster movie convention in the book is used, including all the famous shocks such as something jumping out in the foreground and something jumping out in the background, but what makes this film original is the Gremlins' silly personalities. They don't eat people or kill them in order to survive in any way. They just want to have fun and cause chaos! Their personalities are almost human and seem to represent a side of us that has no morals and just wants to let loose in a world without regulations. At times, you are cheering for the monsters, which makes this movie so unique.

Two major highlights are the bar scene and the movie theater scene where all the gremlins gather together and have a great time!

Fright Night Review

It's safe to say that Charley Brewster has a short attention span. In fact, that's probably an understatement. But, when Charley oversees his new neighbor committing murder through his bedroom window, he finally gets some focus in his life. Much to the dismay of his family and friends, however, his new focus is on vampires. After a violent confrontation with Jerry, the creature next door, Charley is desperate to destroy the monster, and he attempts to enlist the aid of local "Fright Night" horror host Peter Vincent, the fearless vampire killer, to do it. Unbelieving Peter is reluctant, but Charley's girlfriend Amy and creepy-geek friend, Evil Ed, convince him with a bit of financial persuading. Their intention is to prove to Charley that Jerry Dandrige is not a vampire at all, but they are in for the scare of their lives, and it's anybody's guess who will survive the real "Fright Night!"

"Fright Night" is an 80s vampire flick for the classic horror fanatic! Paying homage to such staples as Dark Shadows and the Hammer Dracula franchise, this surprising little horror film supplies vampire lore and cliches aplenty, put together so skillfully that the result is this horror fan's favorite vampire indulgence. Of course, this favoritism is in no small part due to spectacular effects and performances! The cast seems tailor made for their roles as they play them, even if some choices seem a bit odd superficially. Hard to imagine this vampire pining away over the centuries for Married With Children's Marcy D'Arcy, but Amanda Bearse plays the role of the teenage object of Chris Sarandon's desires to perfection. Chris, himself, is powerfully convincing and menacing as the hip, 80's vampire. Extremely well adjusted to the times, too. His slave-boy zombie, Billy Cole, is played by an excellently creepy Jonathan Stark, but he's out-creeped by the always somewhat disturbing Stephen Geoffreys as Evil Ed. Of course, William Ragsdale IS Charlie Brewster, and his portrayal is what propels the film. The icing on THIS cake, however, aside from the teenage victim in the window that I've had a crush on all my life, played by someone named Irina Irvine, is the brilliant performance of one of my all-time faves, Roddy "Bullwhip" McDowall, as Peter Vincent, vampire killer! The late, great Roddy McDowall is definitely the yeast that raises this film from vampire movie mediocrity. Despite the nearly bare bones disc, featuring only a trailer and double-sided widescreen/fullscreen selection, this DVD is a must own for vampire, horror, and McDowall fans alike. Be prepared for some cheezy 80's music and a great time that you'll want to experience again and again! Also, be sure to check out "Fright Night 2," one of the best sequels ever made!

Product Description

Otto Sieber and his film crew staggered down the ruined slopes of Mt. St. Helens - blinded by ash and near death from exposure, Seiber carried with him the most astoninshing footage ever taken of a volcanic eruption and its devastating aftermath. His dramatic footage has been combined with additional film shot before, during and after the eruption to create what is the most complete Mt. St. Helens video program available. INCLUDED IS THE ONLY PHOTGRAPHIC SEQUENCE EVER RECORDED OF THE INSTANT THE VOLCANO BLASTED ITSELF APART. Perfect for classroom and group viewing.

The Eruption of Mt. St. Helens Review

This is a really interesting documentary about the eruption of Mount St. Helens. It's done with actual still shots and video shot just before, during and after the eruption itself. This is not a Hollywood mock-up, or a staged disaster film. It is a real-life depiction of what really happened on the mountain. The videotape was mastered using the graphics and video that were available at the time. The music is what was actually written about the eruption and performed at that time. I lived for several years just a few tens of kilometers from Mount St. Helens. I can say that this video is a realistic version of what it was like in the Pacific Northwest around 1980. My only regret is that a DVD version is not available.

Autant en emporte le vent Review

It seems like a 'new, improved' edition of "Gone With the Wind" has appeared every couple of years, offering the 'ultimate' in picture and sound reproduction, and extras. It can become expensive keeping up, and frustrating (much like buying a classic Disney DVD, when you know a more complete "Special Edition" will soon render your "First Time on Video" copy obsolete), but the new GWTW Four-Disc Collector's Edition most assuredly deserves a place in your collection.

First off, the picture and sound quality is astonishing. Warner's Ultra-Resolution process, which 'locks' the three Technicolor strips into exact alignment, provides a clarity and 'crispness' to the images that even the 1939 original print couldn't achieve. You'll honestly believe your TV is picking up HD, whether you're HD-ready, or not! This carries over to the Dolby Digital-remastered sound, as well. All of the tell-tale hiss and scratchiness of the opening credit title music, still discernable in the last upgrade, is gone, replaced by a richness of tone that will give your home theater a good workout. (Listen to the brass in this sequence, and you'll notice what I'm talking about...)

The biggest selling point of this edition is, of course, the two discs of additional features offered, and these are, in general, superb. Beginning with the excellent "Making of a Legend" (narrated by Christopher Plummer), Disc Three offers fascinating overviews about the film, the amazing restoration, footage from the 1939 Premiere (and the bittersweet 1961 Civil War Centennial reunion of Selznick, Leigh, and de Havilland), glimpses of Gable and Leigh with dubbed voices for the foreign-language versions, the international Prologue (tacked on to explain the Civil War to foreign audiences), and a 1940 MGM documentary on the "Old South" (directed by Fred Zinneman) memorable today for it's simplistic view of the time, and stereotypical portrayal of blacks.

Disc Four is a mixed bag; the long-awaited reminiscences of Olivia de Havilland are more chatty than informative (with the 90-year-old actress more interested in discussing her wardrobe than on-set tension...although a prank she pulled on Gable is amusing), and the Clark Gable Profile is superficial (A&E's biography of 'The King' is far superior). Things improve, however, with the insightful, sympathetic TCM biography of Vivien Leigh (hosted by Jessica Lange), and a WONDERFUL section devoted to brief bios of many of the GWTW supporting cast, narrated, again, by Christopher Plummer (although I wish the filmmakers would have included bios for Ward Bond, Victor Jory, Fred Crane, and George 'Superman' Reeves).

All in all, the GWTW Four-Disc Collector's Edition isn't perfect, but offers so much terrific material that it is CERTAINLY the one to own!

The Winner Review

Alex Cox, the director, has one of the great 80s cult films to his credit--Repo Man--and while The Winner does not have the same resonance, it is still a solid piece of work. The strong cast--Rebecca deMornay, Michael Madsen, Billy Bob Thornton, Frank Whaley, Vincent D'Onofrio, Delroy Lindo, and Richard Edson--does an excellent job of playing out their standard neo-noir roles. Yes, there is some measure of formula-typing here, but it is, after all, neo-noir. DeMornay's femme fatale is not a demon (like Linda Fiorentino in The Last Seduction), but more a nasty vixen who undergoes a change of heart, but, unfortunately, too late. Frank Whaley is terrific as a small-time con man whose motor mouth oozes false schmaltz. Billy Bob Thornton in an uncharacteristic role, sporting a goofy toupee and serving as a henchman for Delroy Lindo's suave Kingman, is a bit on the stiff side, but given his hinted-at affliction, maybe that's understandable. Michael Madsen has one of his many roles as a brute and does the role justice. And Vincent D'Onofrio is effective as well in the title role. One of the flaws of the film is that it shuttles back and forth between characters so frequently that aside from DeMornay's and Whaley's roles, no one character is developed enough to establish a strong identity. But the plot is strong and occasionally sparkles with some of the director's characteristic flashes of archetypal-metaphoric wit. A great example is the winking out of all the lights at the end of the film. Cox himself appears briefly as a wacky French choreographer named Gaston, responsible for the dancers's routines at a chintzy Vegas place called, appropriately, the Par-A-Dise.It's at this place that the title character finds himself most of the time. He's a gambler who never loses--so everybody's after his money. The femme fatale wants him for it. His ex-con brother (Madsen), carrying a mysterious filled-in sleeping bag, needs the winner's money to keep getting by, the way he has been after finally leaving the slammer. The trio of lowlife crooks (Whaley, Edson in one of his well-done 'dopey' roles, and another guy) want the money he creates out of nothing, and Kingman wants to exploit him for it. But the winner is a guy who just does what he does, after almost committing suicide. The winner's mix of innocence and impulsiveness is, for all the brief flashes of this mix that do come through, handled well by D'Onofrio, but as mentioned above, the character is not developed enough for the viewer to feel for him. It's the plotting, a lot of the snappy dialogue (thanks to writer Wendy Riss) and the director's witty style that make this work as well as it does. Not a great film, but enjoyable and fun. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? Yes No Report abuse | PermalinkCommentComment
