One of the greatest movies of Orson Welles. Crazy Chicks: Panama Beach Review

Basically, CRAZY CHICKS: PANAMA BEACH needed better editing. It's mostly Mary Carey at a dance club and bar in Panama City, Florida on Spring Break, talking to several of the customers there, primarily girls. Mary Carey is always sexy, and so are a lot of the girls she talks with. Some of this is really hot, with Mary and many of the other girls flashing us a lot and caressing each other. But in my opinion, there's WAY too much talking here, and a lot of it is meaningless carrying on, as you can imagine with a bunch of drunk people on Spring Break! On the other extreme, when they show clips of a wet t-shirt contest outside, it's hurried through, with each scene lasting only about 3 to 5 seconds. If there's some really hot scene they find, there's no lingering on it. There's some extremely bodacious babes in the contest, but we hardly get to see them at all, so it's frustrating. Fortunately, a couple of them make it into the club with Mary later. Thus, if this thing had been edited better, with less talk and more of the wet t-shirt contest, it would have been a great DVD. As it is, it's just OK. The bonuses are a nice pool strip with Mary Carey from another Peach DVD, and trailers of other Peach DVDs. The whole thing runs about an hour, and has decent picture quality at 1.33:1 ratio.

Broadway's Lost Treasures Collection Review

We should be thankful for what we get on this DVD, so by all means, get it. By doing so, hopefully you'll encourage similar Broadway DVDs to be released in the future. (By the way, also consider getting The Best of Broadway Musicals - Original Cast Performances from The Ed Sullivan Show, which captures some great 1950s-1960s performances.)

However, I have to agree with those who say this set is lopsided, even considering that the producers didn't have the rights to release other footage from the Tonys.

The saddest thing about some of the footage is that, while it claims to capture "sung" performances, in fact a few of the numbers are lip-synched. These include two of the numbers that I was most looking forward to seeing: Angela Lansbury in "Sweeney Todd" and Robert Preston in "The Music Man." While it's great to see these performers in action, the lip synching makes it an artificial experience.

But enough caveats. These aside, there's still plenty to enjoy.

The great John Raitt sings a definitive "Hey There" from "The Pajama Game" a couple of decades after its original run. He sounds just as exciting as ever. The song is shortened, but again, let's be thankful for what we have. And there's also a scene from "42nd Street" with pre-"Law and Order" Jerry Orbach singing his heart out.

Some of the most enjoyable segments are in the DVD's "bonus extras" section. For example, in what seems the oldest segment on the DVD, the utterly charming Barbara Harris performs a number from "The Apple Tree," a 1960s musical that is now essentially forgotten by all but fervent show fans. And to watch those ever-young old troopers Mickey Rooney and Ann Miller singing and dancing in "Sugar Babies" is a joy.

If you are desparate for some Ginger Rogers films, you will want to get this set. It has some classics on it that are available no where else. And all 6 films are quite enjoyable.

Bachelor Mother is a gem- a classic screwball comedy. The Major and the Minor and It Had to Be You are both a bit strange and riske but in a good way! Tight Spot is a solid potboiler. And of course Gay Divorcee and Top Hat are classic Astaire & Rogers musicals.

However, this set is really overpriced for what you get. There are virtually no extras (except on Top Hat, where there's a really nice little introduction by Fred Astaire's daughter), and most importantly, Bachelor Mother is COLORIZED! Which is utterly shameful. It's not advertised as such- in fact, the box set itself claims the film is in its original black and white, but don't let that fool you. What a huge disappointment to those of us who despise colorization. Luckily, its the only one in the bunch that is colorized- the rest are in their original glorious black and white.

Also, I was puzzled by the fact that some of the dvds had menus so plain they looked like someone's DVD-Rs recorded off tv... not a professional looking job at all.

But the good news is, the print quality on all 6 films is decent, the sound appears to be OK, and this set contains films you just can't find anywhere else!!

So if you love Ginger, just prepare to turn your tv screen to black and white and enjoy!
