A&E Biography: Andy Kaufman Review

This special came out around the time of "Man on the Moon" and contains all of the basic rememberances from friends and co-workers.

It is an acceptable overview of Andy's career, but really falls short of offering any groundbreaking material.

You're much better off watching "Man on the Moon" and buying the "Midnight Special" DVD to see what Andy was all about.

Pandora's Box, a luxurious S & M parlour in New York, is about to reveal more than mere flesh. Master documentary filmmaker Nick Broomfield's wry, enlightening film pulls the curtain back on this palace of eroticism, exploring a multitude of fetishes from rubber to infantilism to asphyxiation and mummification. Clients paying upwards of $10,000 a night submit to mistresses who create highly elaborate role-playing scenarios designed to meet the client's specific fetishistic needs. Doctors and nurses, naked wrestling and bullwhipping are played out in diverse theme rooms like the "Versailles Palace" and the fully equipped medical room, complete with surgical instruments. Jewish clients into Nazi fantasies and black clients into plantation slave scenarios lend a provocative socio-political twist to this bizarre and unseen world, and a parlour as unusual as Pandora's would never be complete without the customary medieval torture chamber with racks, cages and guillotine. If you dare... open Pandora's box.

Fetishes (Full Uncut Version) [Region 2] Review

A British male documentarian does a work on Pandora's Box, an SM service in NYC. Like many African Americans, I find the idea of whipping and "owning slaves" highly problematic. However, to each his or her own. This film does show powerful women in sexy leather and shapely corsets giving much attitude and representing. This film will put you in a mood to swish your hips and yell, "Do what you're told!" Still, the main dominatrix was bothered by the filmmaker's refusal to try bondage and I don't blame her. He does come off as a pest and a snoop. I especially hated the way he had to drag opinions out of interviewees' mouths. Though this movie is mostly about male submissives and female dominatrices, the first images are of same-sex, female, SM scenes. I think this was designed to attract the heterosexual male viewer who enjoys lesboeroticism and thinks of it as exotic. Still, it's somewhat misrepresentative. There is one dominatrix of color and though you see her in a race-laced scene, she is never interviewed. I bet she would have been a fascinating subject and I wonder if the filmmaker was being Eurocentric by excluding her. This film is not a history of SM; it focuses solely on one club. I was also worried that this British documentary was meant to act as just another project to make Americans look crazy. However, one dominatrix speaks with a thick, natural French accent and one submissive is English-born. I am glad that some submissives spoke openly to the camera because folk should be proud of what they do sexually as long as it's adult and consensual. I don't think I'd try this, but I will admit that this was a sexy documentary. I have to give credit where it is due.

Black Flag Review

This is a 1983 video containing some of Black Flag's best songs performed live at Target Studios, including songs sung by both Dez Cadena and Henry Rollins.

The video includes an interview with the band, and they perform songs such as T.V. Party, Rise Above, Damages, American Waste, Thirsty and Miserable, and more classic songs from the early 80's. Also included is a trailer of other Target Video offerings.

The Bridge - Series 1 [BLU-RAY] Review

At the time of writing this review the product has yet to be released in United States, and my review is based on the airing of the series on BBC4 from Great Britain.
The Title of this latest offering from Scandinavia refers to Oresund Bridge, which connects Copenhagen with the southern Swedish city of Malm. The opening sequence sees the `staging' of a female body on Oresund, where one half is literally within Swedish borders while the other lies within Danish borders.
Our two main protagonists in the Bridge Rohde (Danish Cop) and Nor n (Swedish) team up against a self-righteous serial killer drawing attention to the ways in which the two countries' governments seem to neglect the poor and needy. He attaches notes to the corpses saying things such as: "Had there been no victims, you would have found no victims." A thoroughly engaging police drama and well worth a look. There are other side stories that seem to have no connection with the main theme, but as the series progresses we will see a convergence of plot threads.
To the main two protagonists then:
We have Nor n Saga (female Swedish Police officer) when it comes to police procedures she is professional and very competent. As soon as it comes to interacting with other people, she's lost and lacks any social skills. There is a hysterical scene in which she tries to chat up a man in a bar, displaying a pulling technique that makes The Inbetweeners look polished by comparison. Although not directly implied it is clear she has a form of Asperger's.
While Martin Rohde (our laid-back Danish Police officer). He has a slightly alarming habit of massaging his groin - but has the excuse of having just undergone a vasectomy. From a recent news article apparently Martin fulfils the national stereo type, as perceived by Swedes of Danes, he's had a lot of wives, he drinks a little too much, and he's not taking care of himself." While Ms Saga, is seen as an odd, but stereotypical Swede, as perceived by Danes.
Martin Rohde has to tread carefully in more ways than one, as he is obliged to team up with his Swedish detective Saga Norn (Sofia Helin), a woman gifted with all the logical braininess of Mr Spock but with even fewer people skills. Her wide-eyed accidental rudeness quickly becomes an icing on the cake for this series. A great series that leaves us a quirky narrative and funny too boot. Not to be missed another fine offering from our Scandinavian neighbours. Please do not put off by the subtitles.

Captain Hayes of the mighty law enforcement squad named the Texas Rangers reached the pinacle of his career when he captured the notorious John Henry, an outlaw cowboy, and put him behind bars. Twenty years later, upon his release, Henry is older but unrepentant. Within six hours after leaving his jail cell, he evens the score with Hayes by holding up the Bank of Texas for $20,000 in gold. Hayes, in his fury, gets himself out of retirement to take up the chase once more.

Once Upon a Texas Train Review

I do love a good western, and this was a pretty good western. Although Willie Nelson is not as good an actor as he is a singer, Shaun Cassidy is HOT HOT HOT in this movie. The first part of the movie is pretty amusing with quite a few old favorite actors, quite a few of whom I believe have since passed on, but it is a pretty good way to spend an hour and a half. With Richard Widmark, Stuart Whitman, Dub Taylor and my all-time favorite western actor, Jack Elam, I really enjoyed this movie.

I Am Legend [HD DVD] [HD DVD] (2008) Review

"I Am Legend" is not a film that sticks closely to it's source material. While that is it's biggest flaw, it is also where it shines. If you ha told me two years ago that I'd get misty-eyed watching Will Smith sing "Three Little Birds" in a big budget motion picture I'd have laughed myself silly, but this adaptation of Richard Mathson's untouchable novel that -while itself being a vampire story- inspired the entire zombie film genre as we know it takes the story we all know whether we've read the book or not and turns it into an exceptionally personal affair for all of us. One man. One dog. A familiar metropolis deserted by day, but crawling with death by nightfall. This is our setting and it's one that never gets old for me.

The plague that wipes out Robert Neville's world is never fully explained, simply inferred to be the result of some sort of failed cure for cancer. Gone from the novel and the original Vincent Price classic, The Last Man on Earth, is the long struggle of Neville to save his ill daughter, his wife's tranformation, and the shocking actions of the US government to contain the plague. What it left is simply one man, alone trying to maintain his sanity and hopelessly searching for a cure to a disease that has already wiped humanity off the face of the earth and left the "survivors" as rabid vampiric horrors. It's sad, it's pathetic, and it's perfectly human. Will Smith has a penchant for picking terrible, schmaltzy films to star in, but no one can deny his talent and charisma as a leading man. Naturally, this is a film he must carry single-handedly and he does an awesome job of it; he's dramatic, he's relateable, and at times, he is funny. The humor is that of the dark and inappropriate kind, but in a world like his, that is all there is left.

The vampires/zombies/infected in this are all CG and more than a bit reminiscent of Gollum from The Lord of the Rings. I'm not a fan of these kind of effects when practical would have been more effective and was acutely aware of the fact that I watching computer-generated monsters, but they worked nonetheless. The infected prove to be terrifying foes for Neville to face, combining suprising cunning, inhuman strength, and impossible agility (hence the CG). Their only weakness is that sunlight kills them almost instantly. Neville plays a game of cat-and-mouse with them, gathering supplies, researching cure, and searching for survivors by day while making sure to get back to his fortified apartment before nightfall when the creatures come out to hunt for his hiding place. More than a few shades of 28 Days Later are present in this film, which is funny considering the book and it's film offspring are largely what provided the elements of that film. So I guess the genre has officially come full circle now.

Ultimately, it's the personal touches that make "I Am Legend" such a treat. Bob Marley provides both the soundtrack to Robert Neville's day and the inspiration for his work, which is both ironic and uplifting at times. This may sound strange for a horror flick, but if you are a fan of Marley (himself a Legend) it makes all the sense in the world as you watch. Watching Neville attempt to interact with mannequins he's set up as he returns the movies he rents (in alphabetical order, one at a time) and seeing him snap when one of the figures is moved is both amusing and, at times, intensely disturbing. When relief finally comes, Neville finds he has lost the ability to interact with other humans at all and is relegated to performing lines from "Shrek", which is playing on his television at the time. The ending is a complete 180 from the book which is disappointing, but not as corny as it could have been. The novel I Am Legend has one of the most brilliant and darkly ironic endings ever put on paper, but director Francis Lawrence didn't ruin it by go for the happy ending either. The result is a compromise between the pitch blackness of the book and the cloying cheese that many Will Smith fans love. It turns out a bittersweet and hopeful conclsion that should satisfy both while not thrilling either. But I left the theater with "Redemption Song" still ringing in my ears and a satisfied feeling. If only every movie could do that for me.

"I Am Legend" fails to adapt the book of the same name to the big screen, but succeeds in so many other ways. I can't give it a perfect score, but I will give it a very hearty recommendation to fans of Will Smith, zombies, vampires, and Bob Marley. Enjoy.
