Once a Thief (Remastered Special Edition) DVD Review

This movie didn't seem to know what kind of genre of movie it wanted to become. It started as a action thriller movie but gradually, it started to wander into a slapstick comedy. The plots were rather forgettable & at times, out of this world but the breathtaking scenes taken in Paris & Cannes, performances by those 3 main stars with solid supporting actors definitely worth the while to relive the magic of HK movie making. This movie enabled you to catch a glimpse of the other side of Chow Yuen Fatt ie. being funny. His versatility is what made him an international star today. If memory serves me rite, this would be Cherry's final movie before she was married to a businessman. How I wish she could stay longer in the movie industry as her performance was always a breath of fresh air aka. refreshing. Leslie Cheung hadn't come out of age then but his talent definitely showed thru. Highly recommended for a John Woo fan.

Manuel de Falla: Nights in the Gardens of Spain/ El Retablo de Maese Pedro/ When the Fire Burns [VHS] Review

This is a compilation of three videos which I would guess originated in the early-to-mid 1980's. Alicia de Larrocha and Charles Dutoit team up for a languid, perfumed Nights (and who does this type of music better than de Larrocha?). Shots of the concert stage alternate with gorgeous scenes from the Alhambra and other Moorish gardens of Granada. Pepe Romero then performs a magnificent Rodrigo Concierto de Aranjuez (and who does this piece better than Pepe?), accompanied by Neville Marriner and the ASMF (if you have to ask what the abbreviation stands for you don't need to know) :o) and more shots of Spanish scenery. Here the overly active camera spins and wheels, to stomach-churning effect but no particular artistic point. The Concierto is preceded by a short, intriguing history of the work lovingly narrated by Pepe, with shots of the aged blind composer and his wife strolling through ornate gardens and historic interiors.

Finally, Dutoit returns with an ensemble of Canadian and Spanish performers for a rare production of Falla's Master Peter's Puppet Show. This combines puppets/marionettes and live performers in a mini-opera depicting an episode from Don Quixote. Falla's score is deliciously pictorial but also subtle, with a suitably archaic flavor. Witnessing a puppet show that tells a chivalric tale from one of his beloved romances, the schizophrenic Don gets carried away as always and charges the stage with his sword, decapitating the puppets and destroying the theater, all in the service of his Lady Dulcinea. The production here is vivid and affecting though somewhat overcomplicated with its live actors doubling as audience and puppet characters. The singing is very fine, especially the Trujaman, the young boy who chants the narrative.

Audio quality is good if not as fresh and clean as some other DVD tracks, and the same goes for the video--possibly from 1980's analog tapes and a bit fuzzy at times. The Big Flaw is the absence of subtitles in Master Peter (major labels are sometimes major stingy). With the help of the libretto in the handsome booklet, it isn't too hard to follow the action, but the music illustrates the text so beautifully that I miss the extra assistance of on-screen titles.

Batman Returns - Limited Edition Steelbook (With Interior Print) [Blu-ray] [Region Free] Review

Batman Returns is very much a Tim Burton film. It is a stranger and darker film than Batman, netherless it is a striking film on several levels. Michael Keaton returns as the stoic and haunted Dark Knight. Danny DeVito is Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin. In the comic book he's a short rotund man who has an affinity for birds and umbrellas. The character is reinvented here. Born grotesquely disfigured, as an infant, he's cast into the river where he's brought up in a criminal circus gang that lives underground in an abandoned Zoo. Michelle Pfeffer is Selina Kyle aka Catwoman, a beautiful yet mousy secretary who's been pushed too far (of a window) and is out for some serious payback. These three disturbed characters make this Batman film more adult oriented than the first one. DeVito's Penguin is a tragic figure but is very evil and is looking to strike back at Gotham City any way he can. The grotesque make-up is impressive and DeVito delivers a powerful performance. Michelle Pfeffer is haunting as the mousy secretary who is pushed over the edge and finds herself battling with her new alter ego Catwoman. A nice chemistry is struck between Keaton & Pfeffer as the conflicted couple. Christopher Walken is on hand as the manipulative and power hungry businessman Max Shreck. Michael Gough returns as Alfred the butler as well. The stunning production design by Bo Welch extends the look from the previous film and Danny Elfman's score is a bit more subdued but retains the perfect atmosphere. The story is solid but the plotline regarding the circus gang is thin. Batman Returns isn't a film for small kids either. Between the overall look of the characters and some racy dialogue, this is a Batman film for more of a mature audience. If you're a fan of the first film, you'll enjoy this Batman film that has a few new twists to it. Charles Aznavour : Au Carnegie Hall / Region 2 PAL DVD / Audio: French / Actors: Charles Aznavour / 150 minutes Aznavour's live concert at Carnegie Hall in 1995 Composer and vocalist Charles Aznavour has long been one of France's most well-known musicians, often drawing comparisons to crooners such as Maurice Chevalier or Frank Sinatra. He has remained consistently popular since his breakthrough in the mid-1950s, and maintained his talents into his 70s, when the live AU CARNEGIE HALL was recorded in 1995. Aznavour performs 27 songs, most of them his own compositions, including his popular hits "She," "La Mamma," "La Boheme," "Comme ils Disent," and others. Aznavour's indomitable voice and performance style are evident in this performance AU CARNEGIE HALL.

Charles Aznavour : Au Carnegie Hall Review

If you are an Aznavour fan, this is a must have. I have 4 Aznavour concert dvds and I think this is the best one available. The sound is good and he is in good voice and form. He does most of his classic songs in various languages (French, English and Spanish) and includes some new ones. I am so happy to have this record of his performance. A couple of times a year, I get out the champagne and watch this video.

This award-winning film chronicles the political events and human tragedy surrounding the 1991 military coup d etat in Haiti and the bloody dictatorship that followed. It presents a searing indictment not only of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency s role in the turmoil, but also that of the powerful and reclusive Haitian bourgeoisie. Unlike the mainstream media, REZISTANS does not portray the Haitian people as helpless victims. It focuses instead on their creative and courageous resistance, and the deep roots of that resistance in Haitian history and culture.

Rezistans (English Version) [VHS] Review

Imagine that 90-95% of the U.S. population do not have access to healthcare, way below the poverty line, Suffer from hunger? Maybe imagine that 80% of America's population are unemployed? What would happen if there was no such thing as social mobility in the U.S and all political rights, liberties and economic opportunity applies to less than 5% of the population?...This is Haiti.
Rezistans is an excellent documentary on the struggle of the poor Haitian masses to attain political and economical self-determination. Sadly, the struggle still continues for the poor Haitian majority which consists 90-95% of the population. Antoine Izmery, was a man of courage. Izmary turned his back on the selfish isolated even racist anti-Haitian ideals of the Bourgeosie class and committed himself not only to Aristide, but to poor Haitian people. Izmerry died for the cause of real democracy and for the right of political access and power from the poor majority. If Americans depend on Western corporate media outlets like CNN or FOX, they don't have a clue what is really happening to Haiti and that is such a diservice to Americans. I reccomend this film to many Americans and other foreigners. They need to be informed that Haiti never had a chance for democracy especially for the poor Haitian majority.

Two Mexican tourists, Steven and Miguel, on holiday at a tropical island resort, flirt with various ladies from England and hunt sharks. The partying soon becomes disrupted by a large and monstrous tiger shark who begins attacking and devouring tourists. Steven and Miguel decide to take it upon themselves to hunt down and kill the beast.

Tintorera: Tiger Shark [VHS] Review

Jaws (1975) is one of my favorite films, and not just because of the fantastic and terrifying effects involving the shark, but because it's one of the most well crafted movies ever produced...the acting, the plot, script, direction, musical score, casting, the character development, attention to detail...everything came together so well...too well, as it turns out because soon afterwards, nearly everyone was churning out lame films featuring any kind of beastie you could imagine in an attempt to try and feed off the success of Spielberg's popular film, incorporating very little, if anything, that made Jaws so good, including this Mexican production entitled Tintorera (1977) aka The Silent Death aka Bloody Waters aka Tiger Shark.

Directed by the prolific Ren Cardona Jr., whose specialty seems to be low budget schlocky Mexican films, the film features English actress Susan George (Straw Dogs), Hugo Stiglitz (Incubo sulla citt contaminata aka City of the Walking Dead), Andrs Garca (The Bermuda Triangle), and Fiona Lewis, who some may remember as the evil Dr. Margaret Canker from the film Innerspace (1987). As the film begins, we are presented with two men in Steven (Stiglitz) and Miguel (Garcia). Steven, who first appears as a patient in a hospital, has had some sort of stress related breakdown from working too hard, and is ordered by his doctor to take a long vacation. He ends up renting a boat off the pacific coast, near a popular Mexican resort, one where Miguel, who also appears to be on vacation, seems to be staying. Miguel is apparently a gigolo by profession, and seems to be continuing his ways at the resort, so I guess his is a working vacation. Anyway, both men end up sharing a relationship with Patricia (Lewis), but she soon gets gobbled up by a shark (in about two feet of water), and, since no one witnessed the attack, the men assume she left, and their once acrimonious relationship turns friendly, sharing the bond of both being stilted by the same woman. Miguel soon takes residence on Steven's large rented boat, and the men begin drinking, carousing with various women, and take up shark hunting. They also, in my opinion, begin developing a homoerotic relationship that's never actually shown, but certainly seemed implied. After awhile, the meet Gabriella (George), and the three develop a creepy mnage a trois...yuck...oh yeah, there's a few more shark attacks, but that's about it...

Now mind you, I wasn't expecting anything great here, but this is just a really terrible film. I will say there are some nicely shot underwater scenes, but that's about it...even those scenes will probably end up putting off some viewers, as many real sharks were harmed in the production of this film. They really seemed to have no problem in killing off all sorts of sea life in the progression of the story. I have no love of sharks, but seeing them senselessly slaughtered again and again kinda turned my stomach. And wait until you get to the part when they gut a defenseless sea turtle...yuck...I guess fake sharks were more expensive than real sharks. The direction is really bad, as the Cardona has no concept of transitioning from one scene to another. One minute you're watching a particular scene, and then POOF!, you're watching another, completely unrelated scene, and you're left trying to figure out what the heck is going on...after awhile, I did manage to put some of the pieces together, but ultimately the jarring effect only served to take me out of the film. There was absolutely no tension throughout, even when I knew a shark attack was imminent. The film has the look of a pornographic movie from the 70's, one where they took out the hardcore sex scenes and tried, unsuccessfully, to incorporate the element of the shark. The acting was on par of what you'd expect to see in a Mexican soap opera (I'm sure Mexicans put out some wonderful shows, but their soap operas are even more atrocious than those in the US), and the dialogue is even worse. The characters spew out the most inane lines, but this does provide some unintentional humor. There is a good amount of nudity, both of the male and female kind, but it was all gratuitous as it served no purpose other than to offer weak titillation to very bored viewers. The plot is incredibly lame, and plods along at a snails pace, as this particular version has an excruciatingly long run time of just over two hours (I do believe there are a few versions out there, with shorter running times, but lucky me, this seems to be the original, uncut version). And then there's the odd and less than appropriate, completely annoying musical score...disco music and killer sharks just do not mix.

Being the 25th Anniversary Edition, one might expect something special with this release. Well, you'll probably disappointed...the full screen print used here looks probably about as good as what you'd see on a used VHS copy. The picture has visible flaws throughout, most involving damage due to age and deterioration. It's not terrible, but certainly noticeable. The dialog is mostly in Spanish, with a lesser mix of English. There are English subtitles available, but when you have that feature turned on, you also get Spanish subtitles when the characters are speaking English. What is the point of that? I suppose if you are watching the film with a group of people, some only speaking English and some who only speak Spanish, it is useful, but if not, it just seems moronic. As far as special features, there are brief biographies and selected filmographies (no listing of this film in there, oddly enough) of the director and some of the talent, along with a few trailers for films I've never heard of, as I believe they're all low budget Mexican productions.
