My Piece of the Pie [Region B] Review

I'd never heard of the film, the director, or the actors. The opening credits gave me pause. My idea of a good French film is one set either in the charming old streets of Paris or the luscious fields of Provence. This had neither. We're shown a struggling, single mother, with her dark roots showing under her frizzy hair, who has just lost her job at the docks in Dunkirk. Then we see the other side of life in Paris...a financier with the morals of a snake lives and works in glossy opulence. It happens that he is one of the brains who has shut down her factory. As luck would have it, she ends up working as his housekeeper, and then as an impromptu nanny. Her humanity is a constant contrast to his scuzziness and yet the chemistry that builds up between them keeps you guessing.

This is a smart film, not predictable, with a lot of heart. It's moralistic but certainly not grim or preachy; every scene is enjoyable. The cast is perfect. Gilles Lellouche is the embodiment of rich scum and yet, at times, we hope for his redemption. Karen Viardi, who is interestingly named "France" is wonderful as the heroine. The ending made me cheer and cry. This is a sleeper which I hope gets a bigger audience in the US. I highly recommend it. I'm going to look up more of this director's work.

I did not realize that this was a foreign movie with english subtitles. While I do like foreign movies, subtitles aren't exactly the greatest for a "kids and family" movie when the audience is a 9 and 5 year old. I should have read the description more carefully. Personally, I do not feel any foreign movie with subtitles should be classified as a "kids and family" movie, but rather, it should fall under the "foreign" category.

The group of films in this collection is so varied, it would be hard to be a real fan of one of the five and not really dislike one of the others. There's no common theme here, not even a time period. The films included are as follows:

All Quiet on the Western Front (1929-1930) - A group of German schoolboys are encouraged to sign up to fight in World War I. Once they get to the front, they encounter the harsh realities of killing your fellow man up close. It's still a powerful film because it was made pre-code and there was much more freedom to use harsh symbolism than in films made after 1934. It really embodies the antiwar sentiment that was common between the world wars. (5/5)

The Lost Weekend (1945) - This is another really great film. Great acting by Ray Milland as Don Birnam, an alcoholic writer whose brother pays his bills so he can go on drinking. After decades of movies making drunkenness look like great fun, this film showed just how low a man can sink when he really needs a drink. (5/5)

The Sting (1973) - This was a different kind of film to win the Best Picture award. It seems like it should be a film noir, since it is about revenge for a grifter buddy murdered by a mobster, but the mood of the film is actually rather playful. (5/5)

The Deer Hunter (1978) - This is a great film about the effect of the Vietnam war on three friends from Pennsylvania. It is effectively a war movie without a war. The focus is more on what happens before and after the three experience what happens in Vietnam than what happens during their time in the military. (5/5).

Out of Africa (1985) - This is one of those slow beautiful-to-behold but impossible-to-watch kind of movies that the Academy honors every now and then. I've sat through it exactly once, just so I could honestly say I had given it a chance, but I really found it insufferably boring. It's supposed to be based on the life of storyteller Isak Dineson, who lived in Africa from 1913 until 1931 running a coffee farm, and her love for a man that wants to keep his freedom. (3/5)...And I consider myself an easy grader.

If you average the ratings of the movies together, you get 4.6/5, so I round up the score to 5 stars. You basically have four excellent films in this pack and one pseudo-dud. However, your mileage may vary depending on your taste in film. It's a good value if you are trying to collect the Best Picture winners on DVD and you can find it for under sixty dollars, plus its content doesn't overlap with the other Best Picture boxed sets. Overall, highly recommended.

Remembering Otis [VHS] Review

This is great stuff. A must for any Stax Records fan and highly recommended to any music fan as an introduction to the sounds that came from Soulsville U.S.A. in Memphis, TN, in the '60s. Redding's legendary Monterey Pop performance is here, looking and sounding better than ever. His version of "Try a Little Tenderness" here may be the best example of the power of the Stax sound. With Stax house band Booker T. & the MGs doing what they did best, building climax upon climax until the whole thing explodes, Redding blew away the West Coast audience in the rain at One in the Morning. The only disappointment on this dvd comes during this song. Instead of getting to watch the MGs and Otis knock the song out, we see Mama Cass and dozens of hippies relaxing and grazing in the grass. It's really frustrating at first, but one begins to appreciate the message in the song. Treat your woman right. And it shows why John Phillips (of the Mamas and Papas) once said that Otis could have been an ambassador of good will to the world. Also from Monterey Pop, we get an unbelievably moving and powerful version of Redding's and Jerry Butler's "I've Been Loving You Too Long".
The dvd also includes footage from the now famous Stax tour of Europe in 1967. And this addition is what really makes this dvd such a great package. Not only does it have Otis doing his thing, but also "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby" and "Hold On, I'm Coming!" by Sam and Dave, and Booker T. & the MGs playing their first and biggest hit "Green Onions". One of the real thrills of this dvd is watching the late, great Al Jackson, Jr. of the MGs. Never will you see a more cool and in control drummer. Bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn, who is amazing throughout, and the brilliant guitarist Steve Cropper grew up watching Jackson and talk of how they would go in to see him play with Willie Mitchell's band in Memphis. They would become "Mesmerized" by him. And it is hard to take your eyes off him, he's beautiful to watch.
So, that's it. You get taken to school by the tightest rhythm section ever, Booker T. & the MGs. You get taken to church by the superstar performance of Sam and Dave, and you get taken to heaven by the king of Soul himself, Otis Redding. The only let down is that, just like Redding's life and career, it's over far too early. But this fifty minutes of ecstasy must be seen and heard. It's the closest the world will ever again get to this level of greatness and showmanship.

I obviously don't agree with the guy who gave this movie 1 star. In my opinion, SitES is one of Jackie's best movies from that period (along with Drunken Master). Sure, the sound effects are real cheesy and the dubbing stinks as always in these old movies. But there are some really cool training scenes to watch and Yuen Siu Tien (who also played the drunken master in Drunken Master) is cool as always. All in all a very entertaining comedic kung fu movie.

I bought this tape kind of half heartedly. But let me tell you the workout is great. Anyone can do it. IT's very low impact but it targets all the areas woman worry about. And instead of being all sweaty and tired afterwards, you feel energized and refreshed. I started using this tape after not excercising for 6 years. It was easy and I saw results after 3 weeks. Black Swan [Blu-ray] Review

Darren Aronofsky has been circling movie news sites pretty frequently as of late. He recently signed on to direct the stand-alone sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine (appropriately titled The Wolverine). He also developed a rather large and devoted fanbase over the course of directing fantastically surreal films such as Pi, Requiem for a Dream, and The Wrestler, but his psychological thriller Black Swan has also been gaining quite a bit of steam leading up to its December 3rd release. Despite Aronofsky's already well-established reputation and the rather high anticipation for the film, Black Swan still delivers a product that is even better than expected.

Like most ballerinas, Nina (Portman) lives, breathes, and is completely devoted to dance. Artistic director Thomas Leroy (Cassel) is preparing a new spring production of his interpretation of Swan Lake. Nina is next in line to become prima ballerina after the former dancer to hold that spot, Beth Macintyre (Ryder), reluctantly retires. Everything seems to be shifting in that direction until a rather unorthodox, provocative, and unstable (in a dangerous kind of way) dancer named Lily (Kunis) arrives. Lily seems to have an eye for Nina's spot as soon as she walks through the door. Thomas begins to see Nina as the White Swan, which signifies innocence and perfection and Lily as the Black Swan, which is more sensual and deceptive. The problem is that one dancer is required to play both parts. Other than the stiff competition she has to deal with, The Swan Queen role begins to take its toll on Nina who begins to think Lily wants even more than her spot in the production. Nina's obsessive behavior leads to her releasing her dark side that she must now struggle to control.

Aronofsky has always had an exceptional eye for cinematography in his films. His use of micro-photography in The Fountain made the entire film a visually stunning spectacle that will stand the test of time while something like a someone's pupil dilating or a drug deal gone bad in Requiem for a Dream is memorable because of the way and angle Aronofsky shot it rather than relying on its disturbing content to make the scene a classic. Black Swan is no different. Being placed behind Nina whenever she heads to the dance venue gives the viewer a rather unique third person perspective that also gives the impression that you're walking right behind the main character of the film. The intense dream sequences are also shot in a way that flawlessly blur the line between reality and hallucination. Is this really happening or is it all a figment of Nina's deteriorating imagination? Figuring that out is half the film's charm.

The extraordinary main cast is the main ingredient to the film being as great as it is though. The key players all seem to have this twisted side to them that is nearly the exact opposite of the way they first appear to be, which coincides with the Swan Lake theme. Winona Ryder steals most of the screen time she's given whether she's trashing her dressing room, yelling obscenities in Portman's face, or sitting in a hospital room. Even though Mila Kunis seems to play nothing more than her role in Forgetting Sarah Marshall to the most extreme degree on the surface, it's the edge she's given that results in unpredictability for her character. While Vincent Cassel's performance is strong thanks to his sensual reputation with his dancers and Barbara Hersey is both charming and disturbing as Nina's mother who seems to secretly be trying to live in her daughter's dance shoes after a missed opportunity in her past, it's no surprise to hear that Natalie Portman is the heart of the film. Nina is so consumed with dance that she keeps pushing herself even when her mind and body begin to show her that she's had enough. Her breakdowns are heartbreaking and engaging to watch while her transformation by the end of the film can best be described as a monstrous beauty. It's all thanks to Portman's powerful, phenomenal, tour de force performance.

While some might not be surprised that Aronofsky has created yet another masterpiece, this may be his most solid and well-rounded film to date. Black Swan is a beautiful, disturbing, and captivating work of art that features gorgeous camera work, an excellent and mindbending story, and what is perhaps the performance of Natalie Portman's career. It's hard to argue with Black Swan being the best film of the year.
