A Stitch in Time DVD Review

I saw this movie as a child, many years ago, and loved it. Unfortunately, over the years, I forgot the title and somehow got it mixed up with "The Disorderly Orderly", starring Jerry Lewis. Decades later, I finally located it on Amazon. It was very expensive, especially for an old black-and-white movie (and with the shipping cost to New Zealand), but if you enjoy Norman Wisdom's work as much as I do, it is worth the price.

It tells the story of Norman Pitkin (Wisdom), a butcher's assistant who causes havoc wherever he goes. Banned from the hospital where he was visiting his boss, he ends up in the children's ward, where he is the only one who can get through to a young, orphaned girl who is in shock. He promises to visit her again, and has to go through all sorts of subterfuge, posing as a doctor, a nurse, a patient, a dental student, a St John's Ambulance officer and a trombonist to get back into the hospital to keep his promise. There is heaps of chaos and hilarious slapstick comedy, as well as a wonderfully heart-warming story of selfless love.

An extra bonus on the DVD is a selection of Norman Wisdom's singing performances (audio only, unfortunately, but still excellent added value for Norman's fans).

Ring Review

I loved The Ring, and I had been looking forward to seeing the original Japanese adaptation of the film, based on the novel by Koji Suzuki, for some time. I was especially pleased to see the Japanese film released with English subtitles rather than voice dubbing, since this helps preserve the original atmosphere of the film. Both Ringu and The Ring are superb, dark, creepy films, very similar yet very different from one another. Inevitably, whichever film you watch first will probably be your favorite of the two. Ringu starts out very much like its American counterpart, with two young girls alone in a house discussing the rumors going around about a video that somehow kills you seven days after you watch it. The aunt of the first victim is a reporter who begins to investigate the story of the tape, soliciting the help of her somewhat inscrutable ex-husband, and soon finding herself in an incredible fight to save the lives of herself, her ex, and her creepy little boy. At this point, Ringu begins to distinguish itself from The Ring, although both follow the same general plot through to the end.

Perhaps the biggest difference between Ringu and The Ring is the contents of the mysterious videotape. In Ringu, the cursed tape is much shorter and far less symbolic, although its grainy appearance and comparative simplicity add a greater dash of realism to it. The tape presented in The Ring is much more frightening and visceral; subtlety rules the day in the Japanese film. Another significant difference concerns the character of the reporter's ex-husband; in Ringu, he (as well as his son, to some degree) possesses a gift that distinguishes him from his American counterpart. This aids the plot along, but it deprives the viewer of some of the mystery and insight gained from watching the mystery unfold in The Ring. Ringu's storyline is much more compact and straightforward, providing us with much less insight into the forces at play in explaining the existence of the cursed video. There is one jolting plot twist in the later stages of The Ring that is not found in Ringu, and I think this takes a little something away from the concluding drama, but Ringu definitely delivers a much more frightening, completely unforgettable climax. The big scene with the little girl climbing out of the well is pretty darned creepy in The Ring, but Ringu's presentation of this seminal event is many times more impressive and frightening; I only wish I could have seen the scene from Ringu before I saw The Ring. It is spooky enough as it is, but I can only dream about the impact the scene might have on those with no previous knowledge of what is about to happen. What The Ring accomplishes pretty impressively with a type of trick photography is expressed naturally in Ringu, making it much more eerie and unsettling.

If you did see and enjoy The Ring, I would definitely recommend getting a copy of Ringu. The knowledge you already have will diminish the impact Ringu has on you, but there are enough differences between the two films to guarantee you a thoroughly enjoyable return trip into this most special world of fear. If you are debating which version to see first, I would recommend starting out with Ringu, if for no other reason than for the power of the much creepier ending. I prefer The Ring's more elaborate and symbolic presentation, more in-depth background into the story of the tape, and added plot twists to the less elaborate presentation of Ringu, but the fact that the American film adds new elements to the plot makes The Ring more engaging for those having already seen Ringu than Ringu is for those having already seen The Ring.

Restraint and Control Strategies: State-of-the-Art Defensive Tactics for Law Enforcement and Security Professionals [VHS] Review

When I first saw the price tag, I groaned inwardly; I was afraid that Paladin Press was going to start gouging its customers the way other companies do when it comes to books and videos on rare info. However, I was able to justify it like this: Paladin seems to charge according to value, and the videos of lesser quality have consequently lower price tags. Well, I say that "R & C Strategies" fits into the Self-Offense" category: worth it. Let me tell you why. The video set already assumes a base level of knowledge in police tactics like the armbar, centerlock, etc., but where it really shines is how Loren shows you how to take them and actually make them work. Not just with the kind of "ho-hum, we're in the dojo and you're being a good uke" sense," but in the "Here's a 300-lb crackhead who's been looking for a cop to eat ever since his parole from penitentiary" sense. How to do the technique in an attack. As such, it is truly useful in comparison to other "joint-lock" videos you might've seen, where you just know that the way they're being done simply won't work. The real highlight was that he showed you how to transition into a cuffing position without giving up the pain from every technique, which is especially helpful. This
is all in tape 1. Tape 2 builds on the knowledge already presented and shows you some basic principles on how to make alternate techniques work when the armbar, wrist twist, etc. gets [messed] up somehow. I wish he'd spent a little more time on those sections, but my favorite was the lengthy section on pressure point
control. I didn't know much about it, figuring it was that kind of mystical kung-fu stuff that Dillman made popular. Loren Christensen prefaces the whole section by telling you why it might and why it might not work, and then proceeds to show where the points are.
They're definitely not things you'll find in a real violent struggle, but when you need to control someone, Loren's info is dead-on. My partners and I tried 'em out, and some hurt like the dickens. Just imagine taking an ASP point behind the ear. Brr. I give Loren's uke credit for taking all that abuse. Loren also covers things like proper striking,hair grabs, and getting the subject into a good handcuffing position. Lengthy review sections definitely helped to reinforce the material, as did the slow-motion photography and overhead camera angles. It's clear that they put a lot of work into the production, and it shows in every aspect. I think Paladin wanted to produce a police tactics video that you could watch over and over again and get something new from each time, and they succeeded.
