Dirty Pretty Things -region 2- Review

It isn't often that you see a well-crafted thriller with something on its mind, but "Dirty Pretty Things" is one of those films. It tells the story of Okwe (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a Nigerian living in London illegally. He works two jobs: one as a taxi driver and the other inside a second-rate hotel. This doesn't give him much time to do anything, but work. When it is time to rest, he has an unusual living arrangement with Senay (Audrey Tautou), a Turkish immigrant that also works at the hotel. They share the same flat, but never occupy it at the same time.One night, while Okwe is working at the hotel, he is asked to check on a room and discovers a human heart. When he tells his boss Sneaky Juan (Sergi L�pez), he's told to keep quiet or he'll risk deportation. This causes Okwe to have a moral dilemma, which drives this fascinating story of the underside of London live. Without revealing too much of the plot, "Dirty Pretty Things" keeps raising the stakes and makes you really care about the plight of the main characters. Fans of the international hit "Am�lie," might be a bit surprised by Ms. Tautou's performance as Senay. Some might find her work shocking, but it clearly indicates that Tautou is an actor unafraid of taking risks. She and Mr. Ejiofor are a pleasure to watch on screen together.Okwe is reminiscent of some of Sidney Poitier's early films. He's sensitive, noble and has strong moral convictions. That's something you don't see much in film today. Ejiofor's performance is all the more remarkable given the world in which his character lives in. Okwe is surrounded by morally bankrupt people that will do anything to become British citizens. He stands tall in the face of many temptations.While a fascinating and provocative film, "Dirty Pretty Things" may not be for everybody. However, if you're looking for an intelligent story with complex characters and don't mind venturing into a seedy world, this film is for you. Macbeth [VHS] Review

This is Macbeth of the Scots, for the Scots. Purists will really like the authenticity of this interpretation as well as the refreshingly naturalistic style of acting. Jason Connery of Robin of Sherwood fame (and we won't mention a famous father) is pleasingly gritty and real while his Lady Macbeth is luscious and driven as LadyMac should be. They are supported by a cast of true scots- a good thing. Students seem to appreciate the understated style and real locations. There is a companion documentary which examines the themes and issues in a way that is not the least bit dry- a feat indeed. 'Screw your courage to the sticking place' and watch enthralled.

Wakulla Springs: A History in Film Review

It is a very well done documentary on the Wakulla Springs. The clips
show early footage of the Florida Parks, and are fun to watch. Any
history buff will enjoy seeing the archival footage that has been saved
from destruction. There are also bonus tracks showing the other areas
that Edward Ball set up in the hopes of keeping some of Florida in a
natural state to share with future generations. Any one familiar with
Tallahassee, will enjoy the segment on the Southwood Farms, which is
now a subdivision, but was once a nature preserve. The footage that was used to make up the documentary came from old advertising footage for the springs, as well as movies shot by the department of defense when it was used as a training ground for the invasion of Normandy. The footage was gone through trying to save as much of the old film as possible from a vault on the Wakulla Springs property.

What i liked about this series is the simplcity and suprise it come whith it. I dont want to spoil any of the story but I think it would be a good series for you to watch

Love Actually [Blu-ray] Review

"Love Actually" is just the right mix of romantic comedy and drama to leave you with that warm, fuzzy feeling as you leave the theatre. It's an ideal Christmas movie for moms and dads who want to see something else while the kids venture into more PG films.Writer/director Richard Curtis enlists a plethora of some of the finest British actors (and a few noteworthy Americans) to tell several different love stories. While it seems that there may be a few too many characters at first, the overall flow of the film allows the viewer to keep track quite easily. The cast is led by the ever-so-charming Hugh Grant as the British Prime Minister. While some critics have called this casting unbelievable, Grant actually pulls it off by portraying a more human, but yet stronger PM that we would all love to have leading us. His dance to the Pointer Sisters' "Jump for My Love" borders a bit on ridiculous, but it is nevertheless fun to watch. In the film, the PM is caught between leading his country with a clear head, or giving in to his feelings of attraction to his tea server Natalie (played by musical actress Martine McCutcheon). And then there's Emma Thompson, who plays Karen, sister to Grant's PM and a long-married devoted mother. She suspects that her husband Harry (Alan Rickman) may be cheating with a sexy co-worker. Her performance, simply put, is a revelation. The scene where she is in her bedroom is an example of phenominal acting. Hollywood Foreign Press and Academy members: please take notice!Another strong performance award goes to Bill Nighy, who provides most of the film's comic relief as aging rock star Billy Mack. He puts out a cheesy Christmas record and then publicly bashes it. But in classic Hollywood ending style, he does have an epiphany and realizes his wild musician life has been missing true affection.Liam Neeson shines as widower Daniel who tries to help his young stepson win the heart of a popular school crush. Equally sweet is Colin Firth as Jamie, a man recovering from a broken relationship in France who falls for his monolingual Portuguese maid. You know what? This film is such an abundance of great performances that I will run out of space discussing them all! Everybody shines! My only cast complaint is that Rowan Atkinson should have been given more screen time.What I also love about "Love Actually" is that Curtis doesn't, if you'll pardon the pun, wrap up each story in a happy little Christmas package. There are a few sad, realistic moments, particularly in the Karen/Harry subplot and in Laura Linney's turn as Sarah, an assistant who has waited so long to be with the man she loves. She realizes, in some of the film's key dramatic instances, that family matters are getting in the way.All in all, Curtis has struck gold again, in tradition of movies like "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and "Bridget Jones' Diary." Yeah, some of the love stories may be a little far-fetched, but aren't they all in fantasy movie world? What matters is that they are sweet and not without their share of obstacles. This film is a nice departure from some of the more disturbing violent films as of late. But be warned: it is a little more adult than most other comedies in theatres. Wow...Hollywood has once again reinvented the movie musical with The Fighting Temptations, a funny and charming crowd-pleaser.
The film brims with plenty of rousing gospel choir music and charming humor. The wonderful star-filled cast is a pure delight and Beyonce Knowles once again shines on-screen and manages to hypnotize with her amazing vocal talent. This one had the audience at my special sneak preview clapping, cheering, and even dancing in their seats. Once it was over, the theatre filled with uproarious applause. This is the definitive crowd-pleasing film of the year--definitely not big on plot, but explodes with fantasic musical numbers that can brighten any mood. This was definitely an amazing movie-going experience. We all LOVED IT!!! See The Fighting Temptations, I highly recommend it.

PLATOON tells a powerful story that moves beyond the horror and gore of the Vietnam War, a story that ultimately depicts the demise and disintegration of a dysfunctional combat unit. We see young Chris change before our very eyes, from a green, idealistic "grunt" to an embittered, disillusioned soldier. Chris' platoon is dominated--and subsequently divided--by two strong, yet very different men: Sergeant Barnes (Tom Berenger) and Sergeant Elias (Willem Dafoe). Barnes is cold, calculating, brutal, intolerant; Elias is compassionate, humanistic. The battle of wills between these two men is just as challenging as the Viet Cong out in the bush, and just as deadly. The film's climatic ending is powerful, spellbinding.I dismiss naysayers of PLATOON as a soapbox for writer/director Oliver Stone's political agenda just as much as I dismiss Mr. Stone's politics. PLATOON hits you between the eyes with its depictions of warfare and human conflict, again and again. There's nothing to feel good about by watching this movie, just as there is nothing to feel good about by fighting a war.
