I am a cockfighter, a real one, and I collect DVDs about the subject, mostly real , but some not so real. This is an entertaining movie with a Cockfibhting plot and a surprise ending. The fights are not the bloody ones you see at a real fight, but you will like the movie.

I would compare this movie to Cockfighter and the Australian version of Rooster.

Frankie Laine Live at Orleans Review

Finally a DVD that takes you down memory LAINE. As a teenager growing up to Frankie's music in the late forties and early fifties this DVD brings it all back. As a former president of the "Laine Islanders" out of Montreal you know immediately that this is the voice you remember. Gentle, yet powerful even at the age of 86 when this DVD was shot. The body sure has aged but the chemistry is the same, ie, half closed eyes, wide spread of arms, no sudden moves etc. It's a shame the musicals that Frankie made during those early days are not available on any kind of media (video etc) with so many important stars of the day. The orchestra has changed from the early days but this DVD offers Big Band Sound. The picture is sharp and clear and the many flashbacks are incredible.
Do yourself a favor and indulge in this DVD as I'm sure there are some hits you'll recall and the new ones are worth the price of admission.

OK, I'm sure there will be 100's of reviews of the film itself, so I'll just skip to the tech review of the disc:

Video:

Full marks to the restoration team; as this is the best you're ever going to see this colourful 1965 classic. Nearly every scratch and dirt speck is gone and the colours look fantastic on DVD.

Sound:

A full 5.1 DTS remix (not much help if you still only have Dolby Digital). Very similar to the Anthology/Love mixes of their mid 60's stuff; not many flashy rear effects (just a bit of reverb to fill it out) but for the modernists - the drums are in the centre and the new mix is a beefy one.

Extras:

A Missing Scene: Just to save you the same disappointment I had - THIS SCENE IS STILL MISSING! However, we do get Wendy Richard, Richard Lester and other insiders; giving an in-depth rundown on the lost SAM AHAB scene.

The Beatles in Help!: A great documentary featuring period interviews of the Beatles with lots of behind the scenes footage interlaced with some snippets of outtakes and 8mm home movies. Very informative. Richard Lester details some of the problems of filming in the mists of Beatlemania (there's even footage of mass crowds in the Swiss Alps!). Neil Aspinell also appears; confirming the well worn stories the Beatles recreational drug use on set.

The Restoration of Help! - An in-depth look at the restoration process.

Memories of Help! - More focused on the crews experiences making the film than the 30-minute documentary. Contains behind the scenes and home movie footage.

Plus two 2 US trailers, a spanish one (with no dubbed Beatles - sadly) and hidden Radio promos.

SCANDAL FIRST LIVE -BEST SCANDAL 2009- Review

I'm surprised that no-one in the US has reviewed this DVD yet despite SCANDAL supposedly having a fan-base over there. However, I think that "SCANDAL FIRST LIVE" should rank as one of the most exciting live DVDs in rock history. I'm not trying to pretend that SCANDAL is the best or most musically accomplished band in the world. They are good - much better than you might expect from what appears to be a bunch of Japanese school-girls - but that is only part of their appeal.
And don't let the fact that you don't understand Japanese put you off - I don't either - but their appeal transcends language.

I first noticed this band back in 2009 I think on a poor quality clip on You-Tube on my crummy little computer screen, but it interested me enough to seek the group out & buy this first DVD of theirs. I was unsure of what to expect when I first played it on a 42 inch flat-screen with Acoustics Q Sound System set-up, but right from the start I was simply stunned (& could only gape open-mouthed) at their raw energy. Without wasting any time on intros they just blast into an incredibly energetic performance of their heavy ultra-high octane classic "Space Ranger". Before you can get your breath back they follow this up with SCANDAL classic after classic - "Sakura Goodbye", "S.L. Magic", "Tokyo", "Shojo S", "Dragonfly", "Doll" & "Scandal Baby" to name but a few - but their isn't a duff track on the whole set-list. Watch out for some brilliant guitar solos from the lead guitarist (MAMI), particularly on "Anata ga Mawaru", "Ring!Ring!Ring!" & the soulful "You, the Night & Tears". And the audience - within touching distance of the stage in this small club venue - just love every minute of it.

Here you have four young Japanese girls, decked out in iconoc high school girls' uniform, looking so cute they could make you go weak at the knees, knocking out the sort of sounds you might expect from an experienced hard-rock band. Only most of the songs are about teen-age growing-up pains & school-girl angst. But, by crikey, can they sing & play their instruments! Before they got club dates or a recording contract they apparently spent every week-end busking in Osaka Castle Park - & does this street-level experience serve them so well on stage!

Briefly, for those who don't know, the girls DID come together to form a group whilst still at school & were in the habit of putting in practice sessions before going home - hence the trade-mark use of school uniform on stage. The front row line-up consists of HARUNA, acknowledged "leader" of the band (although she insists that they are all equal), playing rhythm on her trusty Telecaster & providing rock-your-socks-off lead vocals. On the left is TOMOMI deftly wielding a Precision Jazz Bass almost as big as herself & providing second vocals (& on-stage dancing). On the right stands MAMI, rock solid lead guitarist laying down ruthless riffs & soaring solos with her customised Stratocaster. At the back, baby of the band kawaii RINA cheerfully knocks the crap out of her drum kit with gleeful enthusism.

What sets SCANDAL above all other J-pop, J-rock (call it what you will), or even Western bands of this sort that I've seen, is their total stage presence - their unaffected self-confidence, their genuine enthusiasm, the power of their music etc, I could go on but I think you must get where I'm coming from on this one.

Just to finish by saying that I was so enthralled by this band that I must have played this DVD every week for about a year - or at least until their next live DVD "Everybody Say Yeah - Temptation Box Tour" came out. This is good, but they're becoming more polished for bigger audiences - "SCANDAL FIRST LIVE" show-cases them at their original garage-rock best & as such is an essential addition to any rock fan's collection.

Make sure that you buy this DVD - it will go down in history as a classic - but be warned, once you've watched it the girls of SCANDAL may enslave your soul the way they did mine. I am now a total irredeemable SCANDAL addict.

Bible Collection Box Set [VHS] Review

I bought all of these 6 DVDs separately because I did not know that they came as a set, at a better price! I paid about $15 each, about $90 total, and I do not regret owning them all, but I would have jumped on this set if I had known about it!

Most of these DVDs are very interesting and faithful to Scripture. SAMSON & DELILAH is the weakest of these 6 DVDs, as it spends too much time on non-scriptural characters. ABRAHAM covers many scenes of the 40 year wandering rarely seen on DVD. JACOB is pretty close to Scripture. JOSEPH is great, but it spends a bit too much time rewriting the narration to allow for Ben Kingsley's Potiphar role to expand. I have not yet watched DAVID, but I look forward to Leonard Nimoy's appearance in the film.

Most of these films are 3 hours long, presumably they were mostly all short mini-series when they originally ran on TV. I think only JACOB is about 90 minutes, of the 6 DVDs in this set. You can read about each DVD as they are all sold separately on amazon.com.

All of these 6 DVDs have major TV network, made-for-TV quality, and I am quite surprised and pleased that these movies are so good. I do not know of any better series of Bible stories on DVD.

There is another Box Set available, THE BIBLE SERIES BOX SET, which has 3 other DVDs of this series of movies. JEREMIAH is my favorite of all 9 movies. ESTHER is great, and perhaps the most faithful to Scriptural accuracy and chronology of all 9 movies. SOLOMON is the only 3 hour DVD in this smaller Box Set. There is a GENESIS in this Box Set, but it is not a dramatized movie, just a narration of the book of Genesis, while modern day nomads are shown going about their daily routine. GENESIS is a disappointment and very UNLIKE the other 9 movies, so much so that it doesn't even seem to be part of the same production series.

Bottom Line: I highly recommend that anybody buy both of these box sets, and they will save about 50% over buying each DVD separately! Praise the LORD!
