Eagles: Hell Freezes Over DTS Digital Surround Laserdisc Review

Hell Freezes Over has to be the most realistic concert sound yet available on DVD. I have the DTS encoded six-speaker surround system with a 55" Widescreen HDTV, so the video is better than what I can see or hear at just about any motion picture theatre. I have found no other DVD that can match the production quality and sound, yet. Mostly due to the DTS encoding which is noticably superior to the Dolby Digital 5.1 surround on the home theater system. Above technical quality, the Eagles themselves perform their best yet. Comparing Hotel California on this DVD with their original is like comparing an old Chevy with a Rolls. The old Chevy is a great classic, and attractive, but the Rolls has the ride and the class. Don Felder and Joe Walsh perform better than I have ever before heard them, and playing the Alverez classical guitars on the Hotel California cut is hands-down, just the best version ever. Glenn Frey and Don Henley give impressive performances, and Timothy B. Schmidt also is at his best ever on bass and vocals. I watch it again and again. There is just no comparison to the sound of the DTS DVD and the CD of this same album. I have both and the CD is always a letdown after hearing the DVD. Well worth the price, and a DVD you will listen to again and again.

for those of whom who do not own this yet because of my previous review, i made a very bad mistake!

this film is in fullscreen format, bare bones, but runs just as long as the original vhs addition but 4% faster.
the only difference? sandahl bergman's scene of her running out of the bathroom sniffing her nose after doing some
white stuff is replaced by her being found in the staul by her friend played by kim evenson kong'ed out.

this version is in mono rather than stereo and runs exactly 1 hr 25 min 51 sec. by avenue entertainment 2004

the format is pal region 0(get an ntsc/pal multi-region dvd player). i don't know if the unrated pal region 2 was ever released in the united states or not, i haver search the entire web for it. some site even claim their is only 88 minutes, maybe they were unfortunate to get a bad copy.

the reason this version is good to own? most of the vhs copies floating around have either bad pause spots, silver streaks in them or are just plain worn-out from being rented so many times ove rthe last 25 years.

the starmaker vhs version i have never seen and because it is apprently in cheapo e.p. mode. i won't buy it, because my vhs player's tracking is digital(meaning no knob to manually fix the tracking for perfect picture) and most e.p. mode vhs tapes look grainy anyway.

Xerxes Review

The singing of Murray, Masterson and Garrett leaves very little to desire. However, the mannerism and voice quality of Christofer Robson is too much for my taste. The production is not exceptional and the customes are silly. Nevertheless, this is an enjoyable work that really deserves to be obtained and watched more than once. The music is superb, and Mackerras handles it smoothly and elegantly. Despite all my misgivings, it gave me lots of pleasure.

Crockett Cup 1988 [VHS] Review

Crockett Cup 88 is a pretty good tape to buy if you like to go back and watch some old school NWA/WCW wrestling. You get two hours plus of some action with your favorite wrestlers from this era. The cool thing about this event is that you do not just get to see the tag tournament matches, but you get four different singles matches as well. Ric Flair defends the World title against Nikita Koloff, The Midnight Rider(Dusty Rhodes under a mask) against J.J. Dillon in a Texas bull rope match, Jimmy Garvin vs Kevin Sullivan in a Prince of Darkness match which is a blindfold match, and the Bunkhouse Stampede match from January of 88 as a special bonus. If you see this tape for a price you feel comfortable with I would say pick it up.

This show is just such fun to watch! It's the perfect companion to "Monk" on Friday nights and it always puts me in a good mood. The show takes place in beautiful Santa Barbara and is about Shawn, a twenty-something year-old guy who's developed excellent observational skills under the teachings of his retired cop father. He can't seem to hold down a regular job, so with the help of his childhood best friend, Gus, he opens a psychic detective agency. He uses his observational/detective skills to pretend that he's having psyshic visions with the purpose of mooching cases off of the police force as their 'police psychic'. Of course, not everyone believes that he's an actual psychic, such as his father (with whom he has a strained relationship) and Lassiter, one of the police detectives on the force who is somewhat of a nemesis for Shawn. (Shawn likes to call him "Lassie".) Each episode begins with a young Shawn learning a new lesson (very reluctantly) from his father that ties into the mystery/plot of the episode. Corbin Bernsen does a wonderful job as Shawn's disapproving father and Dule Hill is spot-on as his straight-laced best friend, who has the best perplexed reactions to the crazy stunts Shawn likes to pull. (The expressions on his face are priceless.) "Psych" is truly delightful and one of the few shows on television that are such light-hearted fun. I'm so glad that it was picked up for a second season and I'll definitely be looking forward to its return!

As a collector of hong kong cinema. This is a classic! If you like sam hui and ti lung then this film is for you. Also known as legend of the golden pearl. This is the extended,original language version in widescreen. The other version is the international dubbed version which is not as good. The film itself is part sci-fi, martial arts and action, mixing international locations with humor in the vain of the golden child an indy jones. Highly recommended.

This DVD features Boulez at his best. Here we see him relaxed as ever conducting some of the thorniest music around. His ability to hear everything and gently coax the players to perfection is greatly displayed here. His commentary is also very good.What I found most annoying is that the commentary is frequently over the music. This would be OK if we actually heard the music at another time but frequently we don't. The worst is the spoken remarks placed over the final minutes of the Berg 3 Pieces. This shattering moment in music is completely lost. For instance, we see the percussionist bashing the Mahler hammer to the floor but can barely hear it.Aside from that BIG caveat, the DVD features great music, great playing and great Boulez.
