Judas Kiss [Blu-ray] Review

For me, Judas Kiss (which I saw at the Frameline Film Festival in San Francisco this past June)represents a huge leap in indie gay film making. After years of coming out stories (who have their place, but are clich�d riddled these days), it was fun to see a movie where no one was suicidal about being gay, was not being beat up because they're gay or just worried they could be gay. It also differs from the others in this genre with its lush cinematography and impressive use of CGI effects (and on such a low-budget I know these movies work with). In this film, screenwriter Carlos Pedraza (the web series Star Trek: Phase II) and director J.T. Tepnapa (the funny short Masturbation: Putting the Fun into Self-Loving and the web series Star Trek: Hidden Frontier) takes a simple idea -what if you could go back in time and change your past- and spins a tale about the paths we choose when we're young, and how (at the time) we never think about the consequences of our actions. From that idea, the movie then borrows equal parts The Twilight Zone and a dash of A Christmas Carol and takes us on a journey that while familiar, it is never boring. Charlie David has never been better, giving a wonderful performance of a man in search of redemption for the sins of his past. Then there is Richard Harmon who shines as the troubled young man in search of life outside the reach of his damaged father (he also gave a creepy and memorable performance in AMC's The Killing this past spring). Harmon is brilliantly watchable in what should be a breakout performance. Meanwhile, Belgium singer/actor Timo Descamps as the evil Big Man on Campus is equally as good, along with the talented Julia Morizawa. Then there's Sean Paul Lockhart as the Ghost of Christmas Past. Well known for his gay adult films as Brent Corrigan, Lockhart proves he can act. He's likable, charming and vulnerable, but confident in what he wants. Like Harmon, this could be a game changer for the him.

Dora The Explorer: Dora's First Trip Review

We don't have this DVD yet but we will soon. We just rented it and my daughter sat and watched this entire video and then asked for more. It's a very cute collection of shows about friendship. Dora's First Trip tells how Dora met all her friends. There is also the episode about Friendship Day, one about the big surprise party for Dora, and the story of Dora's grandmother and the Chocolate Tree. They're all very cute and actually this is probably a great video to snuggle up and watch before bed. It got her all relaxed. Great collection. Now that we've tried it we'll own this one soon.

Due to horrendous advertising that buried most of the movie's charms, most people think this movie is a b-grade kiddie flick. But ignore the brainless trailers and the awful extreme-sport ad campaign that accompanied the video release, and you'll be rewarded with an astonishing film.The Iron Giant is complex and sophisticated enough to be a live-action movie, indeed more complex and sophisticated than the movies that trounced it at the box office (I'm talking to you, Inspector Gadget). It is a remarkable achievement of all the elements of a movie working at their very best.The visuals are astounding. The script is funny without resorting to cheap laughs. The characters are well-rounded. The voice talents are ideal, from the Giant's rumble to Hogarth's wide-eyed wonder (for a welcome change, a pre-adolescent boy does the voice instead of someone trying to sound like one).Most interestingly, the movie makes such a dynamic, empathic character of the titular hunk of metal that we genuinely care about his fate. At the film's climactic scene, I was ashamed at the tears running down my face, until I saw that my three friends (all of us twenty-something, manly guys) were misty-eyed as well.Anyone over the age of 8 will love this film. If you don't like animation, try this on for size. If you love all types of animation, see it NOW. Great Expectations (2012) [ NON-USA FORMAT, Blu-Ray, Reg.B Import - United Kingdom ] Review

This latest Mike Newell (Four Weddings and A Funeral, Love in the Time of Cholera, The Awakening etc.) version of Charles Dickens' `Great Expectations' opens with daylight location shots on the salt marshes and, while looking remote and bleak, these aren't the atmospheric mist-swathed shots of earlier studio-based versions of the story. Similarly Newell opens up the acting, giving us naturalistic performances rather than the usual Dickensian parade of over-acted grotesque caricatures. However, unfortunately no one bothered to explain this to David Walliams who's Mr. Pumblechook is firmly in the tradition of a gurning `Mr. Fuzzywig' - like one of his characters from `Little Britain'.

The film does look great, from the salt marshes of the Kent coast to the recreated crowded streets of old London town, and also features wonderful costumes. The naturalistic acting by the main characters - Miss Havisham, Magwitch, Jaggers etc. - seems to slightly lessen their profile in the drama and heighten the role of the central character, Jeremy 'Warhorse' Irvine as Pip Pirrip, and this makes it all the more shocking that as Pip becomes a gentleman he also becomes a terrible snob who forgets his roots. Newell does get excellent (if slightly restrained) performances from Helena Bonham Carter as Miss Havisham, Ralph Fiennes as Magwitch, Robbie Coltrane as Mr. Jaggers and Jason Flemyng as Joe "What larks, Pip" Gargery, as well as the supporting characters including Holliday Grainger, Ewen Bremner, Sally Hawkins and Tamzin Outhwaite.

Unfortunately there have been so many versions of this story, from the classic David Lean film of 1946 to the numerous TV serials including the recent one with Ray Winstone as Magwich, that any dramatic impact the story once had has now gone. Nonetheless, I did find this an engaging adaptation and any reservations I did have were more to do with the slightly clunky nature of the plot as we reach the rather unsatisfactory denouement of the novel itself. I think that younger viewers would particularly enjoy this film (if they still watch non vampire-related drama).

The DVD features extras including "Introducing Great Expectations", "The characters of Great Expectations" (Pip, Miss Havisham, Magwitch), "Deleted and extended scenes" and "Still photos". Generally I found these extras a bit dull and would have liked more on the making of the film - locations, costumes etc. or more about dramatising Dickens.

Hare Rama Hare Krishna Review

The movie arrived quickly and in perfect shape. This movie has a few beautiful stars from India and some really meaningful song lyrics showing a true respect for Indian religious beliefs. There seems to be some historical truth depicted in the movie also. There was truly an influence in India when the hippies from the late 1960's and early 1970's converged on India and the ISKON movement of Srila Prabupada started to become well known in India. I liked this movie very much.
