Xala [VHS] Review

This 1974 gem, by multi-talented filmmaker Ousmane Sembene, is a brutal attack on the enthusiastic appropriation by the Senegalese upper class of French colonialist culture and its dire consequences. Sembene not only wrote and directed the film; he also wrote the novel on which the film was based.

In it, El Hadji, the protagonist, is one of a number of the business and political elite of Dakar (capital of Senegal) who, at the film's opening, accepts a briefcase full of payoff money from the French, presumably to "encourage" continued French business development in the country after Senegal has won its independence. But while spouting homilites attesting to Senegal's independence as a true African state, these members of the elite speak in nothing but French and look down their noses at those who speak Wolof, the native language. Even, in El Hadji's case, his daughter from his first marriage.

He also decries the beggars in the streets, some of whom are disturbingly affected with serious malnutrition and physical conditions like spina bifida, and one of whom, as it turns out, is a relative of El Hadji's. The latter weds his third wife, much younger than he, but is then struck with the eponymous condition of the title, the xala, which is a curse rendering him impotent.

His second wife is furiously jealous of his third. His first wife is more patient. But perhaps the most vituperative of all his enemies are ultimately his "fellow" bribees, who, in one brilliant scene, attack him for his actions that are careless enough to prevent the others in this group from being able to reap more bribes and other corrupt sources of income. He lashes back at them with how tainted they all are, including him, and then suffers the consequences.

The ending of the film is the most brutal of all scenes in the film and will not be revealed here; it's stomach-churning. Along the way, El Hadji visits two different marabouts (Senegalese shamans) in an attempt to rid himself of the xala, and has as well a number of encounters with the various members of his family--wives, sons, daughters.

As noted in another review of this film on this website, Sembene likely saw and absorbed the films of Luis Bunuel; there's a similarity of jet black humor in the tone of the film redolent of the great Spanish filmmaker. Sembene beautifully captures Senegalese culture in all its aspects--from the ultra-snobby rich to the desperate poor, and a couple of layers in-between as well.

This is a great African film; definitely recommended.

Give 'em Hell, Harry! [VHS] Review

One of the more unusual Oscar nominations in Hollywood history was James Whitmore for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 1976 for "Give 'Em Hell, Harry!" Whitmore's performance as Harry S Truman (remember the "S" does not stand for anything so it does not have a period after it as an initial) was captivating enough that Margaret Truman Daniel told the press, "My God, it's my father," so the nomination was not unusual because it was undeserved. But the "film" he was nominated for was a filmed stage performance. Whitman was doing the one-man show of the play by Samuel Gallu and it was decided to record it for television (Peter Hunt directed the stage production while the film was under the direction of Steve Binder).

It is hard to believe that when Harry Truman left the White House he had the lowest approval rating of any president on record (polling was not done before World War II obviously or Herbert Hoover would lead the list). But by the time he died Harry Truman had risen considerably in the estimation of his fellow citizens who saw politicians the likes of Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard M. Nixon in the White House. An honest, plain spoken man like Harry Truman, who never wanted to be president in the first place, suddenly had a great deal of appeal.

The drama is broken down into two acts (plays have intermissions you know). The first covers Truman's strange path to the presidency, starting with him in the "Oval Room" of the White House before taking us in turn to the United States Senate in 1937, the front yard of the Truman home in Independence, the Vosages Mountains of France during World War I, Jackson County Court House in 1931, Sedlia in 1940 and Lee's Summit, Missouri in 1924 as Truman faces down a meeting of the Ku Klux Klan. The second act focuses on the high points of his years in the White House, starting with the meeting with General Douglas MacArthur on Wake Island in 1950 and his speech attacking Joseph McCarthy as Symphony Hall in Boston in 1952, before going back to his famous Whistle Stop Campaigns in the election of 1948 aboard "The Ferdinand Magellan" and the "Victory Special." We end with a walking press conference in Washington, D.C., circa 1948-52 before Truman retires from private life.

Whitmore certainly gets the Truman smile down and you will not be surprised that they manage to work in the famous shot of Truman holding up the headline of the "Chicago Daily Tribune" which erroneously announced "Dewey Defeats Truman," complete with the flashing light-bulbs. By the way, did you know that the famous shot is actually an extremely cropped photograph? You do not think of famous shots as being cropped, but this one, like the flag raising at Iowa Jima, are in that category.

Even those who know of Truman only from the little that they have read about him in the history books will be captivated by the man Whitmore reveals in his wonderful performance. They will even appreciate the value of cussing under certain circumstances, such as troops starting to run when they come under German artillery attack or a newspaper critic writing something not nice about your daughter in the newspaper. After a while you will forget that it is not Harry Truman but James Whitmore, turning in one of the finest one-man performances seen since Hal Holbrook nailed the mark with his Mark Twain (We saw Holbrook doing "Mark Twain Tonight!" earlier this year and what is so impressive is that he has dozens of bits down and he picks which ones to do each day and as the performance goes along).

The stage version of "Give Em Hell, Harry!" is still performed and the last I heard Kevin McCarthy ("Invasion of the Body Snatchers") was doing it on tour and if you ever get a chance to see "Give 'Em Hell, Harry!" or any other one-man show, give yourself a treat and go see it. The one-man show has become a rarity these days, but I have yet to see one that was not worth the watching. ovations.

Gary Moore With Thin Lizzy: Australia Live '78 Review

Thin Lizzy toured Australia in 1978 and this gig filmed on the steps of the iconic Sydney Opera House is what has come down to posterity from that tour. Originally released as a VHS release and still periodically surfacing in that format the release comprises only eight tracks;

Jailbreak
Bad Reputation
Cowboy Song
The Boys Are Back In Town
Waiting For An Alibi
Are You Ready
Me And The Boys Were Wondering
Baby Drives Me Crazy

As such it only cruises to 55 minutes and I have no idea whether that was the full gig or not. If there was more to this gig and the whole thing was filmed it's a miracle nobody has re-released it in a longer format so perhaps this was just a promo gig. And it was 1978 - back when bands weren't necessarily on stage for two hours.

The gig itself was performed in front of 26,000 fans who pretty much go off for the whole gig the band seem on form though of course one must forgive the 70's stage clobber which at the end of the day isn't too bad I suppose. I mean, I remember the 80's.... The stage show is fairly minimal as this isn't a normal venue for music, the stage was a mock up done for this gig so there is no massive light show or anything like that and in fact this outdoor gig starts in daylight.

At the time of writing some people are asking stupid amounts of cash for this thing on VHS. A remastered DVD transfer with a brief biography and picture gallery is quite freely available in Australia, I scored one at a clearance sale for not even A$5. So if you are desperate to have thing get an Australian friend to try and source it for you but of course then you'd need a multi region DVD player.

Centuries ago, the Mayans left us their calendar, with a clear end date and all that it implies. Since then, astrologists have discovered it, numerologists have found patterns that predict it, geologists say the earth is overdue for it, and even government scientists cannot deny the cataclysm of epic proportions that awaits the earth in 2012. A prophecy that began with the Mayans has now been well-chronicled, discussed, taken apart and examined. By 2012, we'll know we were warned...

2012 Blu-ray SteelBook [Region Free, UK Import] Review

So, when the world ends, it's the politicians and bureaucrats that we're gonna save, and the writers and the artists and the spiritual leaders are left behind to deal with the apocalypse. That was the most depressing element of the movie. What will the world look like if we only save the "important people" in Washington? Heaven help us. Seriously. If the future world is to be populated with the slimy-dog politicians and their ilk, I think I'll take my chances with eternal life, thank you very much.

Sitting in the darkened theater watching 2012, I was reminded of "The Bunker" at White Sulphur Springs (in West Virginia). Construction on the 110,000-square-foot bunker was started under Eisenhower's watch, when we were worried that the USSR might blow us up into lots of radioactive pieces. Turns out, our beloved elected officials were prepared to push The Red Button that'd end the world as we know it, and then turn-tail and run into their bunker, slam the blast-proof door behind them and emerge 90 days later when the danger had passed. And the most amazing part: The Bunker is outfitted with gee-whiz features that'd lead the unsuspecting public to believe the lawmakers were still comfortably ensconced in Washington, DC. In other words, The Bunker was *designed* to perpetrate a fraud on the American people.

Watching "2012" I thought about The Bunker and realized, this movie is probably right. If and when the world ends, it'll be the politically important that are given seats on the lifeboats. And it's probably right that if there is a cataclysmic event, the Powers That Be will not tell the unwashed masses what's going on, lest they try and steal one of those seats on the lifeboat.

That's just depressing on so many levels.

But I digress.

This movie is definitely impressive on the big screen, and the soundtrack has plenty of bass (which I like). But the script and the writing was a little sappy for my tastes. And as to believability - well - this movie fell short on that score, too. I don't want to spoil the plot, but NO ONE can drive a limousine *that* well. On the plus side, the graphics are truly amazing and scarier than anything I've ever seen before. I had to turn away from the screen to avoid some of the scary-as-hell images. It's a pretty intense flick, and it does a good job of drawing you in.

A nice side effect: After watching this movie, I'm a lot less worried about getting those pesky credit cards paid off. Does make you think a little more about enjoying every day, and appreciating the simple beauty in our world.

In conclusion, it's an interesting flick with awe-inspiring graphics, and it'll hold your attention - if you can suspend disbelief for a couple hours.
