Aleksandr Sokurov is as artist of the highest order. Not only does he understand his medium of film as his chosen avenue of creating art, he has the gifts of ingenuity, fresh creativity, and daring that make his works unique and stunning without any of the hoopla of 'experimental' filmmakers: Sokurov honors his humanity and celebrates the miracle of life with every stroke of his hand.

For those first introduced to Sokurov by viewing his extraordinary RUSSIAN ARK, a film of such importance historically as well as culturally and artistically that it stands alone: the conception and pre-camera preparation of covering 300 years of Russian history as played out in the Hermitage Museum buildings allowed this master to turn on the camera and record non-stop for the hour and a half of the complete story. The result is breathtakingly beautiful and enormously educational and enlightening - all that one can ask from a work of art.

In FATHER AND SON Sokurov has distilled all of his energy into a quiet, rhapsodic, sensually elegant examination of the relationship between a father and son. There is not much story: there is much being said. A father (the handsome and sensual Andrei Shchetinin) lives with his son Aleksei (Aleksei Nejmyshev - as handsome and virile and tender as Shchetinin) in a rooftop flat in St. Petersberg. The father has had a military career and the son is now at age 19 in military school studying medicine along with his training. The mother is dead and the father and son are closely bonded by her absence and by an amazing love for each other.

Aleksei has had a girlfriend (the incandescently beautiful Marina Zasukhina) but seeing that she is competing unsuccessfully for Aleksei's love for his father, she informs him she has found another love. Another young military student Sasha (Aleksandr Razbash) observes the strong bond between Aleksei and his father and being without a father, asks to move in their flat. Knowing that their time as unified family is limited by the way life passes, the two remain living alone.

Aleksei has dreams that approach nightmares but generally deal with separation anxiety. The father is always there to console Aleksei after his dreams and gently encourages him to pursue the life that will bring him happiness.

And that is really the bulk of the story, simple and short as it may sound. The brilliance of Sokurov's genius is in his means of telling this simple tale. He has elected to film using varying lenses and limiting his color spectrum to the sepia tones that resemble daguerreotypes come to life. His use of moments of Tchaikovsky melodies is sensitive and additive to the mood. His ability to linger over extended physical embraces between this father and son says more about love than any filmmaker before him. Part of the magic he creates is due to the physical beauty of the two actors embracing in the nude in the soft winter light of their rooftop flat. Some viewers have found this homoerotic and are concerned about that aspect of a father with son. A pity, that, being concerned about homoeroticism: the passion between father and son should be able to be viewed on every level for its richness, not for the fear of censorship.

FATHER AND SON is one of the most beautiful artworks on film I have ever viewed. I felt the same about RUSSIAN ARK. I eagerly await viewing his MOTHER AND SON and all the other works that hopefully will flow from Sokurov's gifted mind and talent. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, March 2005

Luna Papa [VHS] Review

I try to watch at least one, usually two and often three movies a day (research for a book on movies dealing in some way with or for kids), and I thought I'd seen every gag possible in a movie. So, at this point I rarely find something new to laugh at in movies. This movie is totally different.

First, it is in Russian so you have to read subtitles. Unless we missed something when the subtitles cut off too fast, both my wife and I forgot we were even reading the dialog. It is impossible to adequately describe the humor in this film. In some ways it is slapstick, but much more. Maybe I could say it is British dry humor combined with slapstick to create a whole new form of comedy.

The first quality we noticed was that everything in the Tartar village out in the middle of a desert was constantly in a hurry. The girl, Mamlakat, imagines getting intimate with a visiting actor, but when it happens - she doesn't really know what happened. Her friend explains things to her. When she realizes that she has become pregnant, she goes for an abortion. Her behavior there is hilarious. However, before she can get the abortion, some other Muslim brothers attack the doctor for their sister's abortion and he is killed. So, Mamlakat is faced with telling her widowed father she is pregnant.

You have never seen a revelation such as this! I won't say what happens, but it is hilarious, yet at the same time very loving. The next thing you know, Mamlakat, her father and brain-injured brother are driving all across Uzbekistan, Tadijikistan, and Kirgizstan in search of the acting troupe to find the father. The three run into all kinds of ridiculous situations, including a ride over the bumpy roads in a blood donor van.

Just when you think everything is going to end happily ever after - on Mamlakat's wedding day to a very gallant young man who is willing to accept the unborn baby as his own - tragedy strikes. You have to see the movie to find out what happened - it is too farfetched, yet perfectly logical-sounding, to reveal here!

I don't know if I should say how the movie ends or not. Let's say, I hope you believe in magic carpets. Well, it isn't a magic carpet, but just about as unbelievable. Again, it is so funny, yet, to the simple mind of Mamlakat's brother so logical, you just have to see it to believe it!

Few Americans will ever see this movie. If you can find a copy of the DVD that you can afford, don't miss it. 'Luna Papa' is funny enough, (and sweet and loving) to make you forget you are reading subtitles! It is unlike any American comedy I've seen in the last 1200+ movies I've watched in the past two years.

The Bible: In the Beginning... [VHS] Review

I do not understand why most critics have very few good things to say about this movie. Okay, maybe the atmosphere is a little dead at times, and perhaps there could be more dialogue, but overall this is one of the most beautiful biblical stories I've ever seen. A superb cast - including Michael Parks as Adam, Ulla Bergryd as Eve, Richard Harris as Cain, George C. Scott as Abraham, and Ava Gardner as Sarah - bring warmth and sensitivity to the familier stories. John Huston's somewhat comical portrayal of Noah is definitely the highlight of the film. I first saw this movie when I was very young. I now own it and watch it often. The script sounds like it was taken directly from the Bible itself. The opening dialogue is, of course, "In the beginning..." The creation scenes which follow are simply magnificant. And the music which coincides with it is just beautiful. Right now I have that image of the birds in flight and the raging sea waters. The one scene which gets me every time ( and which I keep rewinding to see ) is the scene with Hagar and Ishmael in the desert. The spring of water bursting up through the ground at Hagar's feet is one of the most moving moments in the entire movie. This film is definitely worth seeing. Never mind what the critics say.

Highlander [Non-US Format, Pal, Region 2, Import] Review

I just watched this on my old Laser Disc from the early 1990s this weekend. Tonight I watched the Blu-Ray Director's Cut 2010 version!

Generally I hate director's cuts. I want the theatrical version, and I want the director to stick a fork in it and call it done. But this is the exception.

Technically, they did a GREAT JOB lifting this copy from the master.

How can you tell? Because you can tell its stunt doubles and not Lambert or Connery fighting on the cliffs in the Scottish Highlands! The resolution is that good.

Its much brighter than the other versions as well. Two full F-Stops brighter would be my guess.

Also, we Americans finally get a few important deleted scenes that I saw many years ago while in Europe that help tie the story together. For those who haven't seen it, lets just say the phrase "Hey, it's a kind of magic" will now make sense. You also will no longer need say "So how did the Kurgan know Brenda was his girl friend and just show up at her door step?"

They did a great job on the sound too.
