Sweet November Review

Charlize Theron brings on her charm, and Keanu Reeves turns in a surprisingly worthy performance in "Sweet November," a movie that's as light as a fall breeze. Slammed by most critics as a soggy romance with no star chemistry, the movie's premise centers around two people who, through an unlikely series of events, fall in love, though not without hardship. Let it be known, the movie is not that bad. In fact, when put in comparison with movies like "Bounce" and "The Wedding Planner," "Sweet November" is actually kind of refreshing in it's own little way. Yes, the way in which the two develop their romance is a bit tough to swallow at first, but if you can ignore that and allow their growing relationship to touch your heart, then the movie succeeds on those terms. Keanu Reeves plays Nelson Moss, a man who is all work and no play (when leaving for work one morning, he tells his girlfriend, "I have a life, and I'm late for it") as a big ad executive. While taking a test at the DMV, he runs into Sara Deever, played by Charlize Theron, who gives him an answer and gets caught cheating. What does Sara do? She milks the situation for everything she can in order to get Nelson to her home. Her offer? To allow him to live in her house for a month, no more, no less, in order to help him get rid of all of his life's stresses and restrictions. She takes it to the extreme, too, giving his clothes to a homeless man, telling him he cannot go to work (he got fired, anyway), and taking him out into the town to show him the ways in which life can be fun. Like any movie relationship, there are complications. Sara is reluctant to reveal anything about her past or her family, or her reasons for taking in a new man each month. All she will reveal is what she does to help each one of them. Near the end, there will come a revelation that will put the stability of their bond in jeopardy. It seems preposterous, but with a movie like this, the events come in such an order that you can forgive these little pitfalls. Their budding romance really does have a kick to it, and despite the outside criticism, Theron and Reeves do have some good onscreen chemistry that lights up the screen in moments and provides for some very touching moments. The film also has a lot of warm-hearted laughs. A scene in which Sara stands outside Nelson's apartment and begins shouting risque comments at people in order to gain his attention will have you chuckling, while her neighbors, two homosexuals who host a dinner party for the four of them in drag, are a riot. And the overall sweet nature of the relationship between the two is something to smile about, as well as shed a few tears over. In one of his better roles, Keanu Reeves is convincingly emotional as Nelson. In the beginning, her perfectly portrays the egotistical attitude and outlook of his character, and then makes a very believable segue to someone who is so in love he is willing to change his whole life. Charlize Theron is, as always, a gem, bringing a touch of warmth and cheerfulness to her role as Sara. Her acting embodies her character with the zest for life needed to sell us on Sara's motives, and Theron captures that completely. While it's not on par with many other romances on the market, "Sweet November" is nowhere near as bad as critics have made it out to be. In fact, it's a charming movie that is very uplifting, due in part to the moving relationship that Reeves and Theron bring to their characters. It met all of my expectations, which were few, but the fact that it met them is enough to recommend the film. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? First, I have already seen this series and will give it a 9.5 out of 10. I love the story line, art, background and, it goes without saying, the voice acting is Beautifully done.
However the DVD I received forgot to specify one important, very Important, aspect. I can't bring up the dubbing feature. This DVD is supposed to be for my regent. The United States. Other than that it is beautiful.

True Believer Review

James Woods is erstwhile civil liberties attorney Eddie Dodd, his idealism long since forsaken for 4th Amendment violation-under-every-bed cynicism, & Rbt. Downey, Jr., is his summer intern (well, autumn intern) Roger Barron. Woods character based loosely on Frisco criminal def. lawyer J. Tony Serra.

Dodd's conscience-bending guilt submits to Roger's yuppie charm, & the two pursue the mysteries of why a young Korean gang member is serving time for murder & now's offed a member of some supremacist cult in prison. Woods's Dodd is light years beyond over the top with this, but an excellent supporting cast (Downey, Jr., ["...so we can get off guilty little pricks!"], Margaret Colin, Miguel Hernandez, & "70s Show"'s Kurtwood Smith as a D.A. with a closet full of diced-up skeletons) & brisk dialog make him seem right @home there. To the paranoid, conspiracy-soaked veteran & witness to the original crime: "Cecil, are you what heroes are made of?" Cecil: "I did two tours in 'Nam."

If you can get past the new twist on the climactic courtroom scene & the veritable litany of continuity issues here, "True Believer" is one of the most watchable flicks I've seen---meaning, I can sit thru the whole thing without once hitting the pause button or pondering my full bladder.

The great scene in Eddie's kitchenette (with the de rigueur Chinese food) is especially instructive. When Downey, Jr.'s, Roger spouts armchair activist rhetoric ("We all think it's a good fight."), Woods's Dodd lets loose with a tirade against bleeding-heart do-goodism that would make Bill O'Reilly cringe.

Les Uns et les Autres (1981)

Les Uns et les Autres Review

Every film that I have ever seen that has dealt with pre WW2 and the during and after effects all combined together in this amazing and sweeping epic film LES UNS ET LES AUTRES (roughly translated "These people and the other people") and released in America under the title BOLERO.It is difficult to give an accurate review of such a film, directed by Claude Lelouch (A Man and a Woman) because frankly it is overwhelming in it's scope and characters,as it is also a film of music and feeling that evokes the senses, and yet tells a powerful story of people's lives affected by the Holocaust, starting in the 1930's, in four different countries, four different languages, and following the after effects into the 1980's!!!! There is A LOT to take in this movie. One viewing is simply not adequate to express all that is in this film. That it is a tribute to the human spirit and to the power of music is undeniable. The characters in this film are all based from real life, except the names are changed. Some characters I could figure out such as the German Pianist/conductor Karl Kremer, who seemed a composite of Wilhelm Furtwangler (Taking Sides-the film about his complicity with Hitler)and Herbert van Karajan. The Russian ballet dancer who defected to America as Rudolf Nureyev or possibly Mikail Baryshnikov (White Nights-a film based on his defection). The other characters were harder to identify;the failed boxer and the American singer (played by Geraldine Chaplin), and the author who was abandoned on the railroad tracks as a baby! Someone will know who all of these people were that Claude Lelouch places in this tribute to music and humanity. This film is SPECTACLE and I honestly can say that in all my years of watching films,I have NEVER seen anything quite like it.It runs for 177 minutes, just slightly edited from it's original 188 minutes. The music flows from Beethoven,Ravel and Liszt to the contemporary Michel Legrand and Francis Lai.The choreography by the French great Maurice Bejart is astounding.Bejart is well known as the choreographer for the rock group QUEEN'S Queen Rock Montreal + Live Aid.The film can be a little confusing as certain actors,James Caan, Geraldine Chaplin, Nicole Garcia etc.play dual roles. You must keep up with this this film especially in the third hour when the story shifts into the 1960's and then into the 1980's.It is all there, but don't blink.

I would have never known that this film existed unless a friend had given it to me who said,"Dedicate three hours of your life, non stop, to 'experience' this film!" SHE WAS RIGHT.This is as epic and grand as any film I have ever seen.

Tout Ce Que Le Ciel.. Review

Watching one of Douglas Sirk's 50's melodramas is slightly akin to visiting another planet. Everything about the Sirk reality is a bit askew: the people are basic and sincere, while their surroundings are heightened, beautiful and artificial (we know certain exterior scenes are filmed on sets, but the sets themselves are so big and elaborate they boggle the mind). It's a strange mix -- simple characters in an exaggerated world, almost like a David Lynch movie in which the only violence that occurs is emotional. But if you give Sirk's movies time and attention and allow yourself to be taken in by the strangeness, they are surprisingly easy to accept on their own terms. Sirk's 1955 film, "All That Heaven Allows," tells the story of the romance between a well-to-do widow and a young, dreamy, non-conformist gardener. It's the oldest problem in the world: they could be happy and in love if only it weren't for the other people around them. I think the key to the success of this film is the performance of Jane Wyman as the widow. Her character is so fragile, yet also surprisingly strong. She says no more than she has to, but what she does say speaks on many levels. She's kind, but she's also after something she clearly wants very badly. Wyman is able to communicate these contradictions and complications with a calm, almost effortless stoicism. The Criterion DVD is a marvel of technology. It has quickly become my favorite disk and there are a lot of disks that I like -- the picture and transfer are unbelievably crisp, the colors are richer than wet paint, the movie is restored to its proper aspect ratio, and you also get Fassbinder's essay on Sirk (he remade this movie in thoroughly different form with a film called "Ali: Fear Eats the Soul"), and there's also a long, fascinating interview with Sirk himself -- I'd never seen or heard any footage of the director until I saw this and the interview alone made it worth buying. If you're a fan of Sirk, you're going to love this disk. And if you're not familiar with his work, this is the place to start. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? Sade (Frn) Review

This review refers to the DVD(Wellspring)edition of "Sade"...

Daniel Auteuil gives a mesmerizing performance as the Marquis de Sade in this wonderful film depicting de Sade's confinement during one of the most violent chapters of French history.

Heads roll(literally) in late 18th century France. It is the time of the "Reign of Terror" and many aristocrats await their fate...the guillotine! A special sanitarium is used for these upper-crust offenders and de Sade is among them. Found to be immoral and not fit for society, the man who lends his name to what we now call "sadism", never ceases to persue his right to express himself. Even many of the other prisoners feel he is beneath their station in life. But he brings a new awareness to them and when a young girl, the teenage daughter of one of these families expresses her regret that she will die before "experiencing" life, Sade makes it his mission to make sure she is awakened sensually before the end!

This film is beautifully directed by Benoit Jacquot. It captures the essence of the period with the exquiste cinematography of the settings, the authentic costumes, and the outstanding performances of the very talented cast.Although a fictionalized account, the story is believeable and you will get lost in this time and place. Auteuil will have you under his spell in no time. Marianne Denicourt is perfect in her portrayal of Sade's mistress who will do whatever it takes to keep him alive, and Isild Le Besco is remarkable in her intuitive performance of the young Emilie who turns to Sade in her time of fear.

The DVD by Wellspring is top of the line. The widescreen(2.35:1 aspect ratio) picture is gorgeuos. The colors are vibrant. The sourround sound is excellent. You have the choice of DD5.1 or 2.0. You can also choose to have the English subtitles on or off. The subtitles are clear and well placed. Features include an insightful interview with director Jacquot, and filmographies.

A fabulous piece of French cinema, but it may not be for everybody. The guillotine scenes may be disturbing to some, and of course with the main subject being the Marquis de Sade, there are some scenes that are quite erotic.(if this were an American film it may fall into the NC-17 rating).

If you are a fan of Auteuil, French films, or just fine filmmaking, have a look at "Sade".

Merci and...enjoy...Laurie
