Fantastic Four - Rise Of The Silver Surfer (Limited Deluxe Edit) Review

Of all the sequels we've been fed this summer, I have to admit that "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" best meets its expectations. While other major sequels ("Spidey 3" and "Pirates 3") take a decidedly darker tone, "Surfer" kicks up the fun a notch. This should be expected since the previous film and the comic that it is based on is a lot more lighthearted and family-oriented than other films and books of this genre. In "Surfer," director Tim Story isn't tied down to an origin story. He is given free reign of the action in the film and does not let anybody down. All of the original core actors (Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis) have returned (including good ol' Doom, Julian McMahon). The newest addition to this film is the Silver Surfer, the galactic herald of Galactus, a cloud-like being that consumes planets to stay alive. I won't go into comic geek mode, but just know that Galactus is not a cloud in the comics. I do think that the handling of the character in the film, however, is perfect.

When the Surfer arrives on Earth, an Army general (played wonderfully by the underappreciated Andre Braugher) demands that Reed Richards create a sensor to track him and find out what he's doing on Earth. The only problem is that Richards is helping Sue Storm plan their oft-cancelled wedding, Ben Grimm is heating up his relationship with Alicia and Johnny Storm is trying to get sponsorships and girls. It all leads up to the return of Victor Von Doom who gladly offers to assist the military in figuring out what the Surfer is all about.

From there, we are given a healthy dose of light comedy and action in the form of a bickering/normal family trying to battle an old foe and figure out if the new guy is a friend or foe. The special effects, especially those involving the Surfer and Johnny, are wonderful. The only effects miscue that I noticed was with Mr. Fantastic which, honestly, is passable due to the fast-paced and well plotted storyline. Scientific terms fly all over this movie in a fun fashion. Mr. Fantastic steps it up a notch and shows that his confidence is growing. Ben and Johnny are still at each other's throats and Sue is just trying to prevent them from killing each other. It's a fun family-oriented film for the most part.

However, there is one part in the film where Dr. Doom has his way with a few military men. One of them is turned into ash. This part of the film made me think that perhaps the MPAA should have edged this flick up to a PG-13 rating. Other than that particular part of the film, everything else is fairly PG-oriented. There's one brief implied nudity scene with Alba. There's also a little bit of strong language but the characters who attract the most attention from kids, Thing and Torch, have very few curse words to throw around. I'm just throwing this bit of info in for parents still pondering on whether or not to take their child to this film. If they're under eight, you might want to preview this film before taking the kiddoes.

Overall, "Rise of the Silver Surfer" is the best sequel of the summer. Is it better than the original film? Only slightly. Is it better than the first two "Spider-man" flicks? Probably not, but this is sort of like comparing apples to oranges. Just rest assured that by viewing "Surfer," you'll be getting an action-packed, fairly family-friendly comic book flick. The interaction between the fantastic foursome alone is worth the price of a movie ticket or, in a few months, a DVD. Highly recommended, especially to families with children who love comics and action film fans.

Jackie Chan's Police Story Review

I first saw Police Story back in 1989 on VHS. I loved it and thought it was a riot. The fight scenes were great and I just couldn't believe the things Jackie Chan would do to put action on the screen. That is what makes his movies so great. You see the action and amazing stunts and you KNOW that is Jackie doing it, not some stunt double and since he's doing it, it's not that unbelievable. Plus, he knows how to be funny on screen and it works so well with everything going on. His fighting style is not some fancy martial arts. Like Jackie says, it's street fighting and unlike other heroes, Jackie gets so beat up and yet he still gets up and makes you cheer for the good guy.

Now, with this DVD release, you get the movie the way it was. The VHS was at 90 minutes. This version is at 101 minutes which means there were some added scenes which I can't remember for the life of me. It's been so long since I saw the VHS version that I don't know what scenes were put back in.

You can watch it in the English dubbed voices in 5.1, in the original Cantonese in 5.1 or the original Cantonese in mono. Personally, I love it in the Cantonese language because when they dub to American, they try to change the dialog a bit to fit the lip movement. With the Cantonese track, you get to feel the real emotions that the actors used in the scene. Also, unlike his later films, Jackie did NOT dub his own voice in here on the English track.

You would think that is where it would end with this, but no. There is so much more here than the movie.

First off, you have commentary by Rush Hour director Brett Ratner and Asian Film Expert Bey Logan. It's too bad Jackie didn't lend his comments as well. I would have loved that. However, you do get a conversation with Jackie Chan that lasts about 10 minutes where he goes over the stunt work, how he likes to do his own stunts, etc. It is especially interesting to know that they didn't have the budget to rehearse various stunt scenes, so they did them usually in one take. This resulted in some serious injuries, especially with the bus scene. It's amazing to hear how some people came close to death making this film, but when you watch the film, you can see why.

There is also a 35-minute feature where they speak with the people of the Jackie Chan Stunt Team (Sing Ga Ban). Here, many members of this team talk about what everyone's role was, how great it was to work with Jackie, etc. A VERY interesting retrospective on Jackie and his work ethic.

There is also a 6 minute feature that is a tribute to Jackie Chan with Brett Ratner talking about how this movie is so great.

Along with all of this, you also get various deleted scenes, alternate opening and ending as well as a deleted scenes montage that shows some scenes wrapped in between the released scenes so you can see where they would have fit in.

If you've never seen a Jackie Chan film before (what rock have you been under if you haven't?), then see this one first. The stunt work and action is raw and in real time. No wires, no digital enhancements, just pure, raw stunt work caught on film in real time.

Excellent DVD release and it's about time!

All Together Now Review

How many times have you seen a live show and then wanted to re-live the occasion? Well, this is an opportunity to do just that but with lots of bonus material. I received this DVD for Christmas and have already watched it twice. I saw the Cirque Du Soleil show in Vegas and was blown away. Then to get to watch the way it all came together was so interesting. These people are incredibly talented. I was particularly interested in the story of Sir George Martin and his son Giles and how they remixed the songs for the show. We are all so familiar with this music but the way they took it to another level is going to be the start of a whole new trend. The documentary showed the care that was taken to ensure that the finished product would honor the Beatles, George and John in particular. I loved to see Paul and Ringo enjoying the show. And watching Dhani Harrison was like seeing his father all over again. It was very touching. I was also surprised by how much of the show is actually seen. You really must try to see the show in person, of course. Watching this DVD makes you want to see it again. But even if you haven't seen the show take a look at this documentary. And if you are a Beatles fan, you are going to love it. It is great!

Gene Simmons Family Jewels - Season 3 DVD (Region 4 Pal) Review

The cover of this dvd says 'the complete season 3' - it is NOT. Missing is the one hour 'Roast' episode. They have the moments leading up to the show, the planning of it, etc. and at the end of the episode it says 'To be continued...' hmm, well it did not continue on this dvd apparantly. It is nowhere to be found. On the 4th disc is an episode called 'Fan Favorites" and, to add insult to injury, they show clips from the Roast...that's riiiight the one missing from this DVD. This is very deceptive of A&E home video and the producers of the show and being a fan of the show, do not appreciate and feel duped just by seeing the world 'complete' on the dvd cover. So be warned - this does NOT have every episode of season 3. Why they would leave out the funniest moment of the show and leave us feeling let down is beyond me. My guess is they want to release it seperately and gouge us a second time with the price. Very dissapointing. I suppose the next dvd set of this show they will change the opening music and edit down episodes and not tell anyone just like a lot of the TV show dvds that come out these days. I wish deceptive practices like this would stop. This is my only complaint with this dvd. I'm a huge Kiss/Gene Simmons fan but I was really ticked off by this. Anyone agree with me?
