Please count me among the European Drama company's sincere and enthusiastic fans! I received a copy of the Mandrake Root. With great anticipation I watched the film unfold with a rhythm, tempo, agility, and grace that remained faithful to the text. The direction and skilled actors were able to maintain Machiavelli's wit while updating his humour. A genuine tour de force and a great, great pleasure to watch.

After watching Life and Times of Hank Greenberg, I was still really in a documentary mood, so I decided to check out Goldwyn - The Man and His Movies, another documentary about someone I was familiar with, but didn't really know a lot about. With Life and Times of Hank Greenberg, the documentary focuses on a man really loved and respected by many people. Throughout the documentary, there are people who talk about the fact that Hank was their hero, their role model. Goldwyn - The Man and His Movies is a little different: almost everyone interviewed about Samuel Goldwyn mentioned at least once the fact they couldn't stand working with the often abusive and caustic Goldwyn. Loved or hated, Goldwyn was certainly a Hollywood luminary who went to amazing lengths to insure that he had the final word on what went up on the screen. Considered by most to be a phenomenal success, Goldwyn always seemed to be fighting an uphill battle against insurmountable odds. A true film genius who is known for the mantra "make less films, make better films", Goldwyn always seemed to be at war with everything around him, while constantly doing what he could to 'fit in'. What I really liked about Goldwyn - The Man and His Movies was the deep sense of irony in the story of Samuel Goldwyn and how his triumphs seemed to be worse for him than his tragedies. Goldwyn - The Man and His Movies does a great job of brining together the many people touched by Samuel Goldwyn to present a unique look at one of Hollywood's most interesting moguls. Roald Dahl's modern classic tells the story of James, an orphan who is treated cruelly by his aunts, until one day a benevolent stranger gives him some magical crocodile tongues -- and then marvelous things begin to happen! With new friends, James discovers that he is resourceful and loyal. He learns to believe in himself and trust in others.This terrific story is given the treatment it deserves by director Henry Selick and producer Tim Burton (who also made Nightmare Before Christmas together). Stop-motion, live action and special effects combine to bring this incredible story to life, and the effort is dazzling, even though the work is almost a decade old.The dvd features are marginal at best. While it's nice to have the option of DTS or Dolby Digital sound, the other features do not merit calling this a special edition. You can hear the dialogue in English, French or Spanish, and subtitling is available in Spanish or for the hearing impaired. There is also a 4-1/2 minute featurette, a trailer and a Randy Newman music video. Still photos are categorized as Concept Art (9), Puppets (9), Behind-the-Scenes (36) or Live Action (18), and they can be seen as thumbprints or enlarged. There are trailers for NBX, Toy Story 2 and Lady and the Tramp 2. Menus are a bit clunky.Great film. Mediocre DVD edition. Narrated by Lynn Redgrave with much English Christmas and Beatrix Potter lore included, this musical staging starring Ian Holm as the tailor is utterly enchanting. Dance, caroling, nursery rhymes, exquisite cat and mouse costumes, snow falling gently over a fairytale English town, charming actors -- it has it all. Please talk to someone about reissuing it! My old VHS tape, copied off public television years ago, won't last forever ...

Tae Guk Gi 'The Brotherhood of War' 2 disc set (1 DVD + 1 VCD) Review

I saw this movie in the theater shortly after I returned to the US from a year in the Republic of Korea (ROK) where it had played to great excitement among the Koreans. Although there were some overplayed stereotypes in the movie, I highly recommend it. I had several Koreans (in the ROK) tell me to be sure to go see the movie as they felt it accurately portrayed both the frontline and homefront brutality and complexities of the Korean war. The pain of the division of both their family and their nation surmounts any political agenda - save reunification perhaps. Some of the visuals could come straight from Saving Private Ryan; expect lots of violence.

I recomend any dad watch this flick. If you have a daughter you will relate... Every Daddy's fear ... his daughter growing up. That is what this is about. It is hard to let go sometimes and at times we just don't know how. Tony in this movies has that problem and perhaps by watching it we may learn something. Most likely what not to do but hey.

Ali Baba et les quarante voleurs Review

I liked this movie because it is a delightful dose of nostalgia which mingles musical comedy, swashbuckling antics, drama and belly dancing. The film was created in 1954 by the brilliant French director Jacques Becker, featuring the most famous and beloved French comic Fernandel and the lovely and incomparable Egyptian dancer Samia Gamal. This was France's response to the big technicolor epic films of that era. Becker filmed in Morocco where he employed thousands of extras to fill the screen in the big action scenes. Samia Gamal, a well known movie star in Cairo and the most famous Oriental dancer of her time could not speak French. However, she plays her part, which is a leading role, through dance and nonverbal communication. Note how she elegantly manipulates the veil which was inspired by the Russian ballerina, Ivanova who brought veil dancing to Oriental (belly) dance in Egypt in the 1940s. The playful Ali Baba tune which Fernandel sings while riding his funny little donkey will be running through your head for days. This is a real "great escape" film for when you want to escape from the real world and be charmed in the comfort of your own home.

Does anyone here know how to read? It clearly states that this version contains BOTH the subtitled and the dubbed version. If you don't want to read the subtitles, it contained a dubbed english version. How hard is it to realize this? Before you complain, why don't you read the back of the box.
