Those of us who grew up in the late 60's might remember a syndicated English-dubbed Japanese series that featured a red-and-silver giant battling equally-large monsters. The giant was ULTRAMAN.This tape features a made-for-TV animated movie made in cooperation with Hanna-Barbara, the studio that gave us everything from The Flintstones to Scooby-Doo to Yogi Bear. Here three American stunt pilots merge with 3 extraterrestrial defenders to help save Earth from the invading Sorkan monsters.With voices including Stacey Keach, Sr., Adrienne Barbeau, and Chad Everett, this feature gives classic Ultra-action with a definite American flavor. There are some pacing difficulties, including some scenes that seem to be shoved in at the last minute and obvious "pauses for a commercial break," but the story is still pure Ultraman. It's Raining on Santiago Review

"It's raining on Santiago and Easter Island," the early morning radio proclaimed on September 11, 1973, a perfectly clear day. Over and over this mysterious announcement repeated between peaceful, upbeat music. Although it never rained in Chile on that day, a political storm enveloped the nation as the fascist forces of Augusto Pinochet executed a coup d'etat against the democratically elected socialist government of Salvador Allende. This movie is an attempt to tell the story of that coup.Although the movie is a pseudo-documentary, the story-telling style is somewhat disorienting. It assaults the viewer with multiple points of view without a consistent narrator. It leaps back and forth through time, sometimes with only subtle cues on which to orient. Although this makes the story harder to follow, it makes the movie more impactful, helping to convey a sense of the chaos of the coup. This is a French movie with English subtitles--which makes for the interesting experience of "Chileans" speaking French and reading French signs!The film consistently juxtaposed the personal and the political. As the coup is unfolding, we see tearful good-byes as men leave their wives to defend the democratically elected government from fascist thugs. I don't think I'm particularly sentimental, but I found myself tearing up several times during the movie. One of the most haunting scenes for me was a close-up of Allende's wedding ring as he held an automatic rifle during his final stand against Pinochet's goons. The camera pulls back, showing the last few cabinet members preparing to sell their lives for democracy. Liberty, economic democracy, and dignity are portrayed as family values--antithetical to vicious repression of the corporate sponsored military junta.The movie includes Allende's final speech. Powerful last words before he was assassinated by the military. An actual recording of the speech is played (you can hear jamming attempts)--this is not a French actor reading Allende's lines. He chose to die fighting the forces of oppression rather than to leave the country with his personal freedom intact.This makes a good companion movie to the Costa Gavras film, MISSING. Each has a slightly different perspective on the coup, the oppression, and the United States' involvement in destroying Chilean democracy. Both tell intense stories. Neither should be missed.The DVD included no special features other than English subtitles and the ability to jump to any given "chapter" in the movie. Five stars for impact. Three for story telling. Product Description

The Ad and the Ego examines how advertising once appealed to the rational mind, but now targets the subconscious. This high energy documentary quickly explains that before the 20th century, advertising almost invariably explained why you should want a product in logical terms (such as to cure your bunions or make tasks like washing clothes easier). Next, it launches into the bulk of its mission: examining what has happened since the advent of psychology lead to ads that appealed to less tangible and more base desires -- desires for a perfect life, a perfect body, fun times, happiness, and a sense of well being. Rather than a typical talking head affair, there is a nonstop flurry of activity and noise which is interjected by disassemblies of how the media pervades the American experience and what is lost because of it. The film bombards the viewer with hundreds of quick-cut segments of advertising that are set to the music of the notorious band, negativland. If you are fond of negativland, this is a MUST SEE. Obviously, the band was picked for the soundtrack because they, too, concern themselves with the content of our media, and its tendency to push for a culture of unchallenged, bland consumerism. But where the band tends towards humor, the movie is about the researchers' investigation. The combination of traditional research and negativlands' over-the-top style makes for a very engaging exploration of how American behaviors are subconsciously guided by corporate concerns. Some people may find the movie's style too hectic and/or scattered, but the post-MTV generations will certainly be equipped to watch this enjoyable critique.

The Ad and the Ego Review

This documentary uses contemporary television commercials to illustrate how advertising sublty shapes our society. It has been one of my favorites since it was released in 1997 and was required viewing for my artist and designer friends back in the day.

Original copies of this film are hard to find. Because of copyright concerns(?), it's next to impossible for an individual to get a copy.

The duplication quality is questionable, hence the four stars. I've owned three copies and the recording seems to self-destruct after several plays ... but then, we played it regularly for months.

Disclosure: My most recent copy is currently listed for sale on Amazon.
